I have Outlook 2013 in a Office 365 Home subscription with one IMAP account. I am having a problem coming to understand delete mail.

Everything I read indicates that an item should be marked for deletion in the inbox when it is checked for deletion. I delete mail by hitting the delete key on the keyboard.

When I delete mail in the Inbox on my desktop computer, it immediately moves to the Trash folder. It is deleted from Trash only if I open Trash and delete them again.

I looked at the server in Webmail and it mirrors the action in Outlook on the desktop.

In Outlook, I went to the Advanced tab in More Settings and checked "Mark items for deletion but do not move them automatically "

What happens now is when a mail item is deleted from the inbox it bypasses the Trash folder and is gone. It is also nowhere to be found when I look at the server in Webmail.

Further, "Purge items when switching folders while online" seems to have no effect at all when checked.

What I would like to see is when I delete an item from the Inbox, have it go to the Trash folder and then when I view the Trash folder and then return to the Inbox, have all the messages in Trash delete permanently.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

    I don't think you can..

You've seen the two options.... If it'll help - you should be able to right click on the Trash folder and select Empty Folder..

In Outlook 2007 there is an option to empty the Deleted Items (Trash) folder on exiting Outlook - may be a similar option in 2013.

    Sorry for the delay.

It seems strange that there is no auto delete setting.

What then does "Purge items when switching folders while online" do?

I remember such a setting in earlier versions of OL byt I cannot find it in 2013. I also have another machine with OL 2010 and cannot find it there either.

These articles refer to the "Purge items when switching folders while online" option however, with that set, nothing happens when I switch folders. That is the conundrum.

Unfortunately, not being a user of Outlook 2013 or of IMAP I really can't help you beyond the hits posted in my last post.

How hard is this to do;)
Doesn't it give you complete control? And odds are, you can do the TWO CLICK Empty Folder option like mentioned about and poooofffff, the mails are gone when you want them to be gone.

I have others in the organization that are not as diligent as I am and maintaining their accounts.
we have one older chap who doesn't get the concept of delete. currently has approximately 45 thousand emails in various folders including the the trash folder.
sometimes we just have to hold others hands in support
