I completed a clean installation of Windows 7 on my Dell XPS M1330 laptop, on which I was running Vista x64 Ultimate.

The problem is, I cannot now configure Outlook 2007 under the new OS.

As soon as I start Outlook, I get the following pop up window:
"Outlook is not your default program for E-mail, Calendar and Contacts.
Would you like to make it the default program?

When I click "YES ", another pop-up window shows:
"There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program, or if one is already intalled, create an association in the Default Programs control panel. "

Once again, I click OK, and I get to the clean Outlook window. So I navigate over to the Set your Defaul Programs in the Control Panel, and Outlook 2007 is NOT listed, however, Windows Live Mail is. So I click on it,
to set the program association, and under WLM, I see three 2 extensions and one protocol: .eml, which is checked, .vcf which is NOT checked and assigned to Windows Contacts and the only protocol: MAILTO which is allocated Microsoft Office Outlook.

Just for your info, my system is a Windows 7 machine using Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 SP2 MSO, part of Microsoft Office Enterprise.

Anyone knows what might be happening to me? Your input will be highly appreciated.

    Have you tried ....

Outlook > Tools > Options > Other - under General check ' Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar' ?

I have no idea where Windows Live Mail has surfaced from - there is no emailer included in Windows 7. Maybe you installed it with some Updates? Unless you require any of the functions of Windows Live I would uninstall them - if present.

I never saw that popup when installing Office 2007 Pro on my Win 7 Pro x64 build.

I did... That's one of the first things I checked... However, the Default Programs underneath does not work. Only the Advance Options work. At this point I am thinking about doing a complete unistall and re-install...

UPDATE: As I suspected, I had to do a complete uninstall of Office 2007. After I did that, I wanted to ensure the OS would clean the registry completly, so I did a complete shutdown, re-booted, checked that there were no traces left of the program, and re-installed Office once more.

After that, a little icon (Mail (32-bit)) showed up under the Users Accounts and the rest is history. The only problem I now have is that my company server is down (I work out of my home in Houston, while my company is based in Ohio). But I have everything ready for when the server comes back up!!

    Sorry for wasting your time!

You can only use Live Mail if you have windows 7 . This is a major disadvantage to me. I find Live Mail cumbersome and no way as versitile of Outlook or outlook express

That is not the case - granted Outlook Express was superseded by Windows Mail and now by Windows Live Mail and 7 does not install with a default email client.

However to state that you can only use Windows Live Mail in 7 is totally wrong.

Outlook 2007 & Outlook 2010 are completely compatible with Windows 7.

OK, Pete addressed a part of this, let me look at it from the other side:

So you can use WLM on other OS too.

When you install Windows 7 you also install Live mail. There is,to my knowledge no way to add anjhy other e-mail such as outlook or outlook express. Ny query direct to Microsoft gave me the answer that they recognize this problem and are working on it. In addition to this deficiency I also find I cannoy e-mail from word 2007, These lacks are very serious to me and if by the end of this week I still cannot send e-mail from word I intend to uninstall wuindows 7 and revert to my Windows XOP professional pro.
    Any suggestions welcomed.

Outlook is a component of MS Office - you just install it when installing Office.

I have Outlook 2007 running on my 7 Pro x64 desktop and Outlook 2010 running on my 7 Home Premium x32 laptop.

You cannot use Outlook Express with Windows 7 - it was superseded by Windows Mail and now Windows Live Mail.

Sorry, but I have to point out wrong information:

You do not install Live mail when you install Windows 7. It is a separate download that you have to go & download/install. It is not included with the Windows 7 install.

Of course you can add any other email client. Outlook, Thunderbird or any other free (or paid for) email client.

Outlook is also available as a stand alone product... for example from Amazon.

You can't send email from a program if you don't have an email client installed.
