Outlook 2003 has all of a sudden started asking me for my password when doing a send / receive. Nothing has changed since yesterday.

I went through the MS KB article on the subject but it didn't help and nothing else online that I have found worked either so, I'm turning to my favorite F1 source.;)

    Thanks anyone

So do you mean you've gone into the account and added and saved the password?

If so - delete the account info and re-set it up.

    Thanks Steve

    MS kb suggested (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290684)
create a new profile - did that - same result
start in safe mode - did that - same - there are no add-ons running in Outlook to begin with
deleted the "Protected Storage System Provider" subkey and reentered the PW - same failure

Deleted and recreated the account - same result

Turned real time protection off in the av software MS Essential Security - same

There is a status icon at lower right of window during send-receive. Click that icon to view the procedure immadiately after clicking send-receive button and keep that event window opened even if Outlook prompts for password. The window will display mail server messages. It could very well be that Outlook is is giving a password prompt because the server is rejecting your existing password, in which case call your ISP to resolve.

I know the mail settings are correct - I did them myself (and redid them for good measure)

Any chance the size of the inbox folder would cause this?

I once had a customer with 6,000 messages in her inbox in Outlook Express and it just seized up until we deleted the inbox and started over.

This is Outlook however and there are +/- 4,000 messages in this inbox

Does not appear to be an issue - I renamed the Outlook.pst file to Outlook.old and renemed Outlook1.pst to Outlook.pst and the error still occurs

I realize you checked the account settings, but something is awry with them. Sometimes ISPs have issues and existing passwords must be reset.

If send receive fails there will be an error code from the server in that send receive window. What's the messages?

I finally called the ISP and reset the password (I'm a stubborn mule sometimes). The strange thing is that this machine regularly does this. It might be the 5th time we have reset the password. The other machine on the network with Outlook 2003 has never had this happen to it. Both machines are running XPP which was installed on the same day and both are up to date.

Anyway, thanks for the input, I'll not waste any time looking for a solution next time and just call the ISP. I have enough gray hair.:D
