Outlook 2000 (Win2k) appears to send attachments -works when sending to local LAN and to self, but when sent to outside address instead of attachments people simply get:

    winmail.dat

which will not open or do anything. It makes no diff whether attachment is pdf document, or jpg

    Help!!!!

    Thanks,

    Dan

Does this happen to all people or just AOL users?

First, WINMAIL.DAT is a proprietary Outlook file that allows Outlook users to send Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF) information.

Second, complete information about winmail.dat is found in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 241538.

Third, if you don't want to plow through all the techie stuff in that article (and I sure didn't), the relevant part, about halfway down:
    To turn off TNEF:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
    2. In the Send in this message format list, select Plain Text or HTML, and then click OK.

    Hooray for MIZ -solved problem

Followed your very clear instructions re

Send Message on Mail Format tab. After changing to Text format --the attachment was delivered and received correctly by at an outside address.

We have not had a chance to do more testing but I'm pretty certain this fixed our problem.

Who would have thought that correcting the text format would also affect attachments.

Thanks very, very much, for your terrific help and super clear instructions.
