Hi All, ........... Recently I had occasion to switch from my Verizon mail account to Comcast and back again to Verizon. I reinstalled Thunderbird 8,0. There is no problems receiving mail but I cannot send any mail. I get the following mrssage:

    Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending mail: SMTP server smtp.verizon.net is unknown. The server may be incorrectly configured. Please verify etc. ...

My outgoing server (SMTP) is showing as: user - smtp.verizon.net (Default) I have tried various changes in the server content to no avail. Does anyone have a solution to this problem.

And with Verizon you can use 25 or 587 for the smtp port.

Wildfire, & TonyT, .............. I had used "outgoing.verizon.net" in one of my earlier attempts to solve my problem. Unfortunately I wasn't paying attention to the content of the the resulting Send Message Error screen, concentrating only on the "failure to send" words.

The text of the Send Message Error screen:
    "Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending mail: Unable to establish a secure link with SMTP server
outgoing.verizon.net using STARTTLS since it doesn't advertise that feature. Switch off STARTTLS for that server or contact your server provider."

Once I followed the "Switch Off" instruction by bringing up the Outgoing Server (SMTP) screen, clicking the EDIT button and placing None in the Connection security block I was able to send my e-mail messages normally.

As to the Verizon port, the Outgoing Server screen above shows that my system is using the 587 port.

A Thank You to each of you for taking the time to suggest solutions to the Outgoing Server problem.
