Otlook Express Folder COmpression Tool - Help

I don't want my e-mail folders to be compressed. After installing SP2 I was asked if I wanted to do so and I didn't do it. However, the last time I used the OE it was starting to compress the folders , without asking anything. How I can disable that option? Hope you can help me.

 

Gerry27, you didn't say which verson of OE you have but go to Tools>Options Maintenance tab and uncheck the box next to "Compact messages in the background ". I have OE5.5 so if you have a newer version this may be located in a slightly different place.

 

Gerry27 --Just curious why you do not want your email folders compacted.

First my OE is 6.0 .
Unfortunately, the option to stop the compatcing is not on those tabs.

I friend of mine had a terrible experience when folders were compacted, retrieving them afterwards was almost impossible. I use them intesively, therefore I am almost constantly checking some "old" emails, so I prefer to have them where I can see and check them anytime.

 

Gerry27--I never thought that compacting the OE message folders changed the contained files (email messages), but rather optimized the space used for the folders. This seems quite beneficial when you delete a lot of messages, since the vacated space is not used too efficiently.
It seems that SP2 must have changed something since I no longer have the option mentioned by JohnB on the Maintenance tab. So, strange that you still see this automatic activity after updating to SP2. Maybe I also answered that message you mention and in the process deleted that option.
You can still compact manually from OE File|Folder.
