I had perhaps the weirdest experience I've ever had w. OTL tonight (I'm using Windows xp). I had just sent an e mail and all of a sudden the entire pc crashed. It was running 1 second & went entirely dead the next.

When I logged back in to my PC and opened OTL there was a msg. about retoring data. Then I tried to find the msg. I'd been sending when the crash happened. It wasn't there. Then I tried to send a new e mail msg. & got this error:

    "Documents & settings\Richard Silverstein\local settings\application data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook1.pst in use & couldn't be accessed. Close any appl. using this file... "

I also could not receive incoming msgs.

Finally, I did something that caused a msg. to display telling me I should try to use Inbox Repair Tool to fix the problem. I followed the directions & did this & now OTL works once again.

I'm alarmed that my profile got corrupted in this way. Does this indicate there may be an underlying problem that might recur? Is there anything to be done to address this problem so it doesn't happen again?

Usually corruption is a freak of nature...

Be sure and use the auto backup function found under FILE.

I don't see any auto backup setting in the Outlook FILE drop down box. Which program are you speaking about?

Are you replaceing the word "drive" with C
Did you include the " "
Did you check your-> program files\microsoft office and see if yours says office 10 or 11?

Yes, I tried all those things (using Office10 & office11--I have folders for both in my Microsoft Office folder) and it still doesn't work. When I queried Outlook Help for "Personal folders backup tool" it specified using the Import/Export Wizard for backing up data & didn't mention the backup tool at all.

You could type the first link I provided above and type and download the app.

Or with Outlook closed, drill down to: Documents & settings\Richard Silverstein\local settings\application data\Microsoft\Outlook\ and right click on the .pst file and send it to compressed folder - or copy it it to another folder/hard drive.
