I hope you folks can help me"

My Outlook 365 locked up twice, while trying to find a specific piece of email. I restarted twice, but then got an error message:

"Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file C:\Users\AlexH\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\alex_howard@msn.com.ost cannot be opened"

I tried to locate an equivalent tool to ScanPST.exe for OST files, but cannot find such an application, and still am unable to open my Outlook on the desktop PC.

Multiple reboots have not solved this issue, and I am no unable to see my email, unless I go toOutlook.com on the Internet. I haven't tried System Restore, as I am not certain how that might effect this situation, and no software has been installed, nor have updates been applied, when this happened.

And no, I've not tried using Windows' Mail app, as I don't want to further compound this problem.

Can anyone help me restore my desktop-based Outlook to working order?

    Thank you in advance,
    -a.

    1. First we're going to right click the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin).
    2. Once the Command Prompt appears, paste/type in the following: sfc /scannow. *Note the space between the c and the /.
    3. Leave the window open while it scans, which could take some time depending on your configuration and hardware.

It returned to the command prompt in less time than it took to type this response.

But you should know that I created a new profile, and used the OST from https://outlook.com and seems like all is well now. However, the original profile is not functional. I'm guessing there is no reason to retain it but since it's not hurting anything, I'm gonna keep it around for a while.

    Thank you very much,
    -a.

Yea, a new profile will work. Quite a few users have also reported that resetting the navigation pane solves the issue.

You can do that by running the following command from a command prompt: Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Just curious, Arie. What does resetnavpane actually do?
    Thanks again,
