OS stopped booting

    I downloaded Directx 8.1 and on restart the system stopped booting very early in the start up bar and hung.
    It stops in safty mode too.
    Any ideas on what to do?

    Sounds like a repair - repair console thing maybe.

    If you don't have the repair console loaded, check Here for how-to instructions.

    My best guess would be that you have a corrupted registry hive - probably the system hive. Maybe not but it would certainly cause this behavior.

    I used the recovery console and replaced the software file, in the process I reverted to some old settings. But it worked and I am running.
