I recently plugged into my XP Pro machine a USB external drive. After I have removed it, its icon is still there. Now the icon has a red question mark over it. I can't get rid of it! I am so sure this is the job of a registry hack here, but do not know where to look for this. Any help in removing this orphan drive? Incidentally, this drive icon shows up as "Other" in Explorer.

Does a reboot clear up the problem?

    Hello moboking,

If you want to get rid of it permanently, plug it back in and uninstall it thru Device Manager.

If you're going to use it again, do nothing, as soon as it's plugged back in (the original usb port) it will become usable and the red question will disappear.

Now the icon has a red question mark over it. I can't get rid of it!
This is normal for devices not plugged in.

    Regards - Charles

Did you remove the drive via the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon which should appear in the Notification Area when the drive is plugged in?

Worth checking - when the drive is plugged in - in Device Manager under Disk Drives - right click on the USB drive > Properties > Policies tab. Is the drive optimised for fast removal or performance. If the latter it should be removed via the icon mentioned above before physically disconnecting it.
