    Hi,

I came across a problem of VERY slow web connections from an hotel in Benin although the bandwidth and the transfer rates by FTP were quite good (about 1 Mbits/sec). Web sites either did not load completely or did so only after several minutes.

I suspected a DNS problem because
    - sites where there was a lot of call to different servers were most affected
    - on simple pages that required only one call, the page loaded but only afetr a few seconds of waiting.

I checked by ipconfig /all the DNS configuration and saw:

    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 2001:16f0:d030:8::250
    41.222.192.9
    41.222.192.10
    212.122.224.10

So, it seems that the default DNS address was an IPv6 address.

Now, when trying to make a nslookup to a site that is registered on the Internet, I got a time out:

    C:\>nslookup www.facm.ucl.ac.be
    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
    Server: UnKnown
    Address: 2001:16f0:d030:8::250

    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
    *** Request to UnKnown timed-out

So, this DNS server with an IPv6 address does not answer.

When I repeated this nslookup but selected the 2d DNS server (42.222.192.9) to send my query, I did get an immediate and correct name resolution:

    C:\>nslookup www.facm.ucl.ac.be 41.222.192.9
    Server: UnKnown
    Address: 41.222.192.9

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: webhost-test.uclouvain.be
    Address: 130.104.5.102
    Aliases: www.facm.ucl.ac.be

So, my connection was good !

    I have two questions:

    - the address of the first (default) DNS server is an IPv6 address ... but I was told that the network was working only under IPv4 ... So, why did I get this IPv6 address (on my local network [that works with IPv4] and with the same computer, I only have one DNS server address and it is an IPv4)

    - is it possible that the point of access is misconfigured and gives an IPv6 address for the default DNS server, but because this server either does exist or does not work, there is time-out each time there is a call for name resolution before the OS will fall on the next DNS address ? This would explain why web sites load very slowly but FTP transfers work fine (with FTP, there is only one name resolution at the beginning of the session)

    - it is possible to reverse the order of DNS assigned by the point of access and/or the OS, so that if I get gains an IPv6 as default and an IPv4 addresses as second address, I could force the IPv4 address to be used as default ?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Paul

Open Network & Sharing Center >
Click on Change adapter settings >
Right click each (wired/wifi) adapter > select Properties >
    Uncheck IP6

No harm in having it disabled because it's not used just yet.

You can also set your own DNS servers in adapter properties. I use Google DNS:
    8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4

DNS addresses are assigned by the router unless you manually configure the DNS servers to be used. The order is determined by the order they are listed in the router or on your comp.

OK. This seems straight. I should have disabled IPv6 ! Actually, I tried to enter the Google DNS in place of the assigned-by-router IPv4 DNS, but it did not help because I still got this IPv6 DNS address as the first one. Now, I see that I could have avoided that by simply disabling IPv6.

    Still two questions:

    - what is this IPv6 address (2001:16f0:d030:8::250). I checked on whois (using http://ip-lookup.net that resolves IPv6 addresses) but all I got was a "?" (for both host and country); how and why did the router assigned this address that does not resolve ?

    - would the fact that the IPv6 address (2001:16f0:d030:8::250) was give as first DNS (and did not respond) the cause of the very slow web connections ?

Yes, especially if after changing it results in less latency.
