Both of my optical drives, CD-RW and DVD-ROM, cannot load their device drivers - the device manager says they may be corrupted or missing. Without the drives working I cannot reload windows which is where the drivers are to be found - any ideas ?

Have you tried removing/uninstalling both drives in Device Manager and rebooting to re-install them?

They come back in the same failed condition.

Open the case and remove and replace the ribbon cable connections - at both ends and the power connectors . If the problem persists try another cable.

It seems unlikely that both drives would have failed simultaneously.

Removing and reinstalling the cabling didn't fix it so I've decided to trash it - it's six years old and getting weary in other respects. Thanks for your help.
