:) A happy Camper is writing this reply AM. :)

I got my new WD 80gig HD yesterday.
Plugged it in as Primary slave.
Booted to Floppy that came with it.
    Ran diagnostic test.
Set it to do a Disk to Disk Copy.
It was late when this was finished so I just shut down.
Got up this AM. Removed the old drive.
    Reset Jumpers on new drive.
Fired up and BINGO Just like it had always been here.

Through all of this I never touched the BIOS (CMOS ) settings. The BIOS picked up the new HD as and LBA, ATA 100 right from the first boot.

It was not as outrageuosly fragmented as I thought either. Now it is time to get coffee and morning paper and take a few minutes to relax before starting the next phase.

Which will be a little re-partioning. Get a Boot Manager installed and by the end of this day I fully expect to have a 98SE/XP Pro system. Just think I need to take a little more time and get XP right ( hopefully ) the first time.

    I forgot.

All partitions were resized so that the same C: thru H: used the full 80gig.

Take it slow. Post with questions as they arise, and don't wait until something gets totally messed before trying to fix.
I'm sure that I'll be around most of the day, and others as well, to help as you go.
I'd really like to see this go smooth and painless for you.
(I'll stop in throughout the day to check) :D

    Thanks

Boot Manager in stalled. Re-partitioning done.

One thing that I am doing different this time. And that is only doing ONE step at a time with Partition Magic. May be a little more time consumming but I think safer.

I think in the past I have tried to make PM do too much at once.

:D And as amazing as it may seem everything still works. :D

Now I gotta set the 6.5gig un-allocated space set up as the 2nd Primary.

One question for right now though. Seing as how I will have a Multi OS I believe I will need to be careful about making changes in 98SE until I can get the XP system restore set so the it only works on the XP C: drive.

I believe SR was what may have caused me problems with SE before.

XP's system restore will put the "system volume information" file on the drive/partition. Just leave it alone! Once you have system restore turned OFF on that partition, then you can delete it, in either XP or SE.
XP does not need a primary, nor even an active partition to install.
    You're still thinking 98...
Once you have the boot manager set up, set it's default boot to the partition you want XP on, plug in the CD and install.

Personally, I would do away with a 3rd party boot manager, and let XP handle it through boot.ini...another example of the KISS syndrome.
If XP ever gives out, or you want to dump it again, all you need to do is fdisk/mbr and sys the C drive, and you're back into 98.

The problem arises though, that "the BB way" may not work for an XP install, depending on which boot manager he's using, and how it's set up.
If his system will allow two partitions, primary, and active, then it may work. Some systems will only allow one active partition.
Personally, I would set it up with two drives, Install each OS independently (with the other OS drive removed), and then install a boot manager, or simply let the XP boot.ini handle it.
Seems he's going about it the complicated way (hence my comment about "thinking 98 ". :D

    Good to hear!
Now, what boot manager did you use, and what "tweaks" are on your priority list?

    :( No longer a happy Camper :(

Power dipped while rebooting I lost both SE and XP.

    I will not my words in print. :p ( I don't think I have to anyway )

I had no menu Choice and it would not go into XP anyway.

I managed to got SE back by booting to a startup disk and doing an SYS C:

    WHEW !!!

As to boot managers I had PQ Boot Magic in and the install of XP knocked it out anyway but I still had the choice of XP or SE. So I do not needed it.

Things are now going to set till tomorrow.

    A very unhappy BillyBob

I agree with Reboot- KISS. Why do you need a dual boot anyway? Just curious. Everything can be set in XP to be backwards compatible. Why not just dump 98 altogether? XP is an entirely functional OS, IMO.
