Please jump to POST #3 - below post is poorly structured ... sorry about that.

Friend at work (kids in middle school) want / need to have Word/Excel on computer. When I explained MS charges for program he asked if any free types. I suggested Openoffice, but should check with school per education discount for MS Office and/or OpenOffice compatible with school environments. Answer came back, no MS discounts and OpenOffice just fine.
I'm sure OpenOffice will be fine for kids, but in the event they want it removed I prefer a quick/clean uninstall. Would OpenOffice Portable perform equally as OpenOffice Full on computer, but allow a easy "delete folder" removal.

    Additional info
I should include OS will be Vista and above needs to be accessible from multiple user accounts.
Accessible to multiply users / document storage locations could be challenging for portable install ??
I could direct output documents to be stored on "Public" folders ... then again locating OpenOffice portable.exe program in same Public folder may solve BOTH issues??

Dennis if you go into Forums > Open Office Portable > How do I uninstall. This should answer your query. Neil.

Sorry guys, I structured my original post poorly and should have rewrote it when added additional info.

    Following is what I'm asking
Friend at work has a 2 year old notebook with Vista OS, 5x user accounts.
They need a free Office suite installed. ...

If I install OpenOffice Full, this would set up OpenOffice accounts (saved outputs) in each "User" account and build program launch icon(s) in "All Programs" for each user account. This is all fine and dandy, but can complicate uninstall if the need arises.

If I install OpenOffice Portable in the "Public Folder" and create a program launch shortcut in each "User account" desktop, this eliminates 5x individual "user accounts" setups. If I need to uninstall, just delete folder in "Public Folder" and desktop shortcuts.

Which of the above would be a better solution??

You should not have any complications when uninstalling no matter the number of user accounts. The uninstaller won't remove users' docs, just the programs.

OO portable is better on a thumb drive, that's what it's designed for. And AFAIK if install OO portable on the hard disk you would also have to manually do the file associations for each user account.

Much easier, faster & more efficient to just use the standard OO install. And if they ever do purchase MS Office the OO install can coexist with it with no problems.

One computer - 5 user accounts - but only two need Office Suite access.

All good points TonyT, will install full version. OpenOffice being one core program should simplify a clean, trouble free uninstall if needed.

Thank you guys for your input. :)

Note: You can do a custom install with OO. For example, most of the time I install it on clients' computers I just install Writer (Word), Calc (Excel) and Impress (Powerpoint). More often than not people won't need Base (Access), Math (?) and Draw (Publisher), but just like the MS Office installer these can be added later if needed.

A couple of days ago, a friend sent us an attachment to an e-mail that was an Open Office Document (.odt). Word 2003 couldn't open it. So much for the much vaunted "interchangeability" with Microsoft Office!

I had to use a software language translator program to get it into Word, and a lot of the formatting was messed up when it was translated.
