My laptop runs Windows 2000. It has a xircom combination ethernet/modem card. The ethernet part of the card works fine, but when I try to use the modem, I get a message saying that the port is already open.
I printed the modemlog, which is several lines long. The last line says "Opening the modem device failed with error 00000020.
Does anyone know what the code means, or where I can look to find out?
    Thanks

If you are running a Xircom Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56 (model REM56G-100) then look Here.

Otherwise, take a look in your event logs for more details about the error.

If no good with either of those, give more details.

Thank you for replying to my post.
I'm embarassed to say that I found the problem myself. The computer assigned the modem to com4, but windows device manager does not recognize that port.
To fix it, I uninstalled both the modem and the ethernet interface and shut down. I removed the card and restarted. After start up, I plugged the card back in and let windows load the PnP devices automatically.
Now both the modem and ethernet portions work OK.
    Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for posting back with the specifics. These threads are read by folks who never post and you may never know but someone else with the same problem could find their fix here.
