If I click a link which opens in a separate IE 6.0 window, it sometimes freezes up. It got so bad that the entire system would freeze and I'd have to hit reset. I've just repaired IE's installation and then installed M$ updates (including that one that messes up icons) + updated my video card's drivers. Now I'm back to a point of it freezing up, by I can at least kill the program with EndItAll. However this is very annoying.

Another thing is when the entire system's frozen up, I've had IrfanView running in the background playing MP3s, and when only the program froze, I did not have IrfanView running. Is there some known conflict between IE and IrfanView or is IE just a crappy program?

It must be the browser. Everyone knows that 3rd party applications, hardware, device drivers, and last but not least, the end user are never at fault.

I'm not saying I'm not at fault, but I'm doing anything I haven't done before! The thing just started pulling this garbage on its own. The only changes I made were installing QuickTime and updating my antivirus signatures. However I don't have QuickTime set to run at startup and I don't see how an updated virus signature could cause problems.

I assure you I am not one of these newbies who goes and does something stupid and then blames the computer. I keep control over what is and is not installed on my machine. But if the comptuer starts acting up on its own, I don't see how I am to blame.

Click Start , and then click Run. Type "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotes).

If that doesn't work, look here.

I've seen that command typed before; what exactly does it do? I have up-to-date video card drivers; I just downloaded them yesterday. I checked my Downloaded Program Files folder and there is no TRACKER.CLASS in there. The only times it seems to freeze up solid is when I have IrfanView playing MP3s in the background, but I've done that countless times before and never had problems till this week. It's very strange. I love IrfanView and it's never given me any problems. I wonder what could cause it to change like this.

    Hi shadowhawk
Do you know your system to be completely free of spyware?

    Shadowhawk.....

If something starts going wrong, undo the last thing you did. If that doesn't work, undo the second to last thing, etc., etc.

I have this really bad habit of downloading updates, drivers, shareware, freeware, and someone's grandmother's social security number. I ALWAYS get in trouble.

You might say," Moore, you idiot, why do you do that?" Well it seemed right at the time...Soooo, I got Norton Ghost and keep my C: and my files on another partition. I can restore my exact c: in about 57 seconds. I make a Ghost file before I install anything now. It also makes me absolutely fearless when working with this ulser causing hobby.

I'm running Windows ME..... (which has workded great)....and have had to fall back on the restore feature more times than I care to count. You've inspired me to yank out my Ghost CD.

It ensures that the .dll is correctly registered.

Shadowhawk - you may have been bitten by the recent "no plug-ins" thing that M$ did with IE6. Quicktime was for sure one of the items affected.

    Try downloading Apple’s ActiveX control.

QuickTime works fine. It was only when I would open links in separate browser windows. I scanned for spyware with my Adaware and it found 19 spyware items from Gator installed on my machine! I never installed Gator. Could QT have been the culprit that installed this monstrosity on my machine, and could that have been causing my woes?

If Gator got installed on your machine and you didn't put it there.....you've got enable install on demand checked under Tools....internet options and then advanced tab. Go in there and uncheck it.

OMG! There are 2 Install on Demands. One is the regular one and then the other has OTHER in parentheses around it. I never realized there were 2 of this command! TYSM. That must be a new IE 6 "feature ".

I did exactly that. Why the 2nd one? I mistakenly thought my firewall would keep stuff from being installed on my machine like that. Will unchecking both keep trojans from being put on my machine also?

Unchecking those only brings you back to being prompted about whether you wish to install something.

Shadowhawk? You make me nervous when you ask if it will prevent trojans. Tell me you have a recent and updated virus scanner running on your machine?

Of course I do. But a cyberfriend told me that antivirus programs don't stop all trojans. I was told you actually need a separate trojan scanner. Is this true, or will an antivirus program stop trojans?

You'll find a description of the Install on Demand feature here and some suggested settings for IE here.
