I have about 5 internet shortcuts in my links that is displayed on the tool bar of I.E. 6.0. When I click on one of the links IE opens and the URL is displayed. When I click on another link the current URL is replaced by the URL I just clicked on. What I would like to do is have links that I click on open in a new window so I can jump between two or more open windows.

Click tools>internet options>advanced. Uncheck the line that says reuse windows for launching shortcuts. This may or may not work. On mine it works for all shortcuts except those in the in the favorites menu (including the links bar). It does work when opening a favorite while viewing them in windows explorer. But then, who wants to have to go through that? If it doesn't work for you, as a work around until somebody else comes up with something, you can right click on the favorite in the links bar and choose open. It works for me.

**** Zander, life is bad if your born to hunt and have to work.... lmfao....

I tried what you suggested and it didn't work for me. I unclicked the box in advanced options and clicked on the icon... replaced what was open.... tried right clicking the icon and selecting open and got the same thing:mad: I do find it interesting that it works different when I select the sites from "My Favorites" versus "Links. "

I do appreciate your input. I'm running XP Pro so maybe it works different for different OS. OTOH, Excel has a limit of 15 numbers per cell so obviously Billy Gates doesn't use Excel to keep track of his money;)

Ok; here's one for you. After reading your last post I got to experimenting a bit. I have four folders containing shortcuts on my links bar, also, a few shortcuts that aren't in folders. What I've discovered is this. The shortcuts that are in the folders (on the toolbar) all open in a new window when I right click and choose open. If I right click on a shortcut in the toolbar that's not in a folder it will open in the same window, just as yours does. Guess I've just never tried it before with those that aren't in folders. So.... maybe the work around is to create folders in the links folder and move them into the folders. The folders are kind of nice to have anyway. You can squeeze more in that way. ;)
Boy, you got that right. My dad used to always tell me I should have been born in the 19th century. I always told him "no thanks ". I don't think I want to hunt that bad. Besides, think of how much more work there'd be then as opposed to now. :D

Strange ...... ...... no matter where the link is located (in a sub folder or not) or how I open it (click or right-click-open), they all open in the same window.

The only way I get a link to open in a new window is when right-clicking a hyperlink in a webpage and choosing "open in new window ".
Well, I can also shift-click the hyperlink.

As Christer says, "The only way I get a link to open in a new window is when right-clicking a hyperlink in a webpage and choosing "open in new window" ". ( "webpage" means any hyperlink, but for some reason includes Links and History.)

And as has been mentioned, you normally do not have the rightclick| Open in New Window option for the other Favorites. You can however create it (at least in Win98 and IE6) by modifying the Registry. (Of course, backup your existing Registry before doing this.)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
    "AllowWindowReuse "=dword:00000000

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Internet Shortcut\shell\Open in New Window\command
    @= "rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL%1 "

P.S. I should credit someone for this, but I cannot remember where I got it or who was the author. :(

I have both reg entries, but I never added them myself. Although this one:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Internet Shortcut\shell\Open in New Window\command is different from mine in that instead of the Open in New Window part it's just Open. Looks like this:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\open\command
Perhaps it's a typo on your part. Anyway, I don't know what the result should be exactly, but it is as I stated previously. Perhaps it's just one of the umpteen wonders of the world of Windows. :)

Grrr. Looks like a registry key that isn't doing much for me. XP-pro SP1 and IE6

When I first looked, I had
    rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l (lower case letter 'l')

    changed it to
    rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %1 (number '1') and no effect I can see.

    Changed it to
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL%1 (removed the space after URL) and no change that I can see.

Zander--I was not too clear. When you get to shell, right click on it (in the left panel) and then create a new key called "Open In Window" and then under that "command ", finally entering the Default value I typed .
"Open" is indeed one of the commands you already have by default in the drop down menu when you right click on a Favorite. You are adding a new one.

Newt--Here is what I copied directly from my Registry (using Control+C) from that Default command
    rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %1
    and it works.
But as mentioned, I run Win98FE.
You are getting the quotes at either end when you create the actual value in the right pane?
And you did make the first change in HKCU?

I found the following somewhere or other...another forum, I do remember that much Didn't even require a reboot and the right-click, Open in New Window was available for IE Favorites.

It's not exactly the automatic "click in the link bar and it opens in a new window" but it's maybe better than nothing?

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
    "AllowWindowReuse "=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\Open In New Window\command]
    @= "rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %1 "

I guess I should have realized you were adding an item to the menu but.... Anyway, I added it and it was still a no go. I got a rundll error message when I right clicked on a favorite and chose the new entry.

    Error in shdocvw.dll
    Missing entry:OpenURLD:\DOCUME~1\LOCALS~1\FAVORI~1\Links\DLAFRE~1.URL

That's about it. I've got XP installed on the D: drive. That's whey the D:\DOCUME~1 etc. The last thing in the path is the name of the shortcut I clicked on. It changes of course depending on which shortcut is clicked on. There's no need to try to run it down. I just thought I'd let you know what happened. I wondered if maybe it could be due to the empty Open in New Window key. I noticed that there's a couple of data entries in the Open key. There's none of course, in the new Open in New Window key. I tried adding the same data to the Open in New Window key that was in the Open key. No go. After doing this, the Open in New Window entry didn't even show up in the right click context menu. Go figure.

In case you're wondering, I have both the keys you mentioned. The first one I had previously, the second I created. The result was what I mentioned above.

OOPs!! I'm back already. Guess I goofed the first time around. Got it right now and it works. I know there was really no need to for this, but I guess that's why they say back up your registry when editing it. I'm one of the worst offenders when it comes to that. I just hack away and worry about it later. Some day it'll get me though. Hey, thats what system restore is for. :D In this case, no harm was done of course. But the next time..... :D

When I want to bounce between several windows while browsing, I use Control/n to open the second, third, ad infinitum. I have tried ticking and unticking the reuse shortcuts box, and no effect on IE's behavior.

    Zander--Great news!! Enjoy;)
P.S. Was it any particular thing that had interferred in your earlier efforts? Like my suggestions?

You're suggestions were fine. The only thing that interfered was my skimming through your post instead of taking time to actually read it (something I've been guilty of in the past). My problem with the error message however, was due to me forgetting to create the command key. I just stuck the data into the "Open In New Window Key ". When I went back to delete the new key, I saw the command key was missing and realized right away what I had done wrong. All's well now though. Thanks.

HKCU was as you have it when I looked. And no quote marks around the rundll32.... part but since the key is REG_SZ I wouldn't expect any.

The dang key was back to ending with a letter 'l' rather than a number '1' though. ???

Newt--Well, maybe it does not work in WinXP. (I do not know what Zander runs and certainly do not know the XP Registry.)
But have you tried re-editing that "l" to a 1?
Good Grief, if WinXP Registry will not accept what you enter, that is a real bug.

I'm running XP Pro. This key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\open\command
has the same data as yours Newt. This is the data:
    rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

I have the small L at the end too. But, I added the keys that Jim mentioned (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\Open In New Window\command) and unless I'm not seeing things right, it's the same data except at the end there's a %1 instead of a %l. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you here or maybe it's the other way around. Do you have the Open In New Window\command key or are you looking at the open\command key?
