I don't think my earlier version of Netscape did this,so maybe creating a new profile to use with v.7.2 changed something, (I don't know) but now when I click on a link in a forum or on a webpage when surfing with Netscape 7.2, the link will open in a new window. Sometimes, I end up with a lot of Netscape pages open at one time without realizing it, and then to close each of them I have to manually click on each one and select close.

Is there a setting in preferences or either a user.js preference that will open a link that I click on in the same Netscape page that is already being used so that then I can just use the back button to go back to the previous page?

    TIA,
    Vanilla Ice

That's the first time that I saw something very useful right below your message. But, the previous thread died. I don't have any problem. In fact, I have the opposite problem, since I use Tabs. What are your Tab browsing prefs?

Thanks for the sharing that link, but my problem has nothing to do with opening anything in my mail client. That works just fine.My problem is that the Netscape browser opens a seperate episode of Netscape for any and all links I click on wherever I am surfing. For example, when I click on the link you posted here in this thread, it opens a completely new browser window to display the page in.
I don't want Netscape to do that and would pefer to have the link open in the Netscape web browser page which is already open to this post instead of a seperate web browser page opening.Sorry, Maybe,I am just confusing you and have not explained it all very well. I don't use Tab Browser and the settings are what they would be when it was installed. I have not changed them. Maybe I am being to nit-pickey about all this. I just hate having multiple browser windows open all the time. Anyway, Westside, thanks for trying to help me out though.

    Vanilla,

In about:config, check this setting: advanced.system.supportDDEExec
The value should be "true ". If not change it to "true ".

    Vanilla,

One fact that I was reminded of by another member: if the web author uses the TARGET= "_new" tag, then the link will open in a new page regardless. This site uses that tag, and links open in a new page. Most users prefer that...

I would go for Tabbed browsing if I were you, and once you try it, you will love it!

    Please see:

    Block Target Link

    To suppress New Window Opening.
You may have to completely exit program for tweak to take.

    captjlddavis,

Excellent find, and in fact I will add that to my Solutions page! That fix can also be used for Firefox. See : Did you know??? Some Features you may have missed.

These pages are full of Tips & Tricks for Firefox, in addition to the Open Link in Same Window .

Hi Ramona, Thanks for the help on that and for explaining how it works also. I needed to know that. I think I would like to try Tabbed Browsing...Can you tell me (I'm a real dummie on things like this) exactly how it works and what settings if any I would have to set.Are they set in the Preferences thingie? How do you get different pages to open up in a tab while surfing and then how would you just close one particular one and leave others open if you wanted to?

captjlddavis, thank you for the tweak info and the help, It all sounds good to me.

BTW,I appreciate all the helpful hands and knowledgeable people here at BBS who are so quick to respond to my questions.
