I have XP Pro but still like to use my trusty ol' MS Photo Editor. I have this set up on more than one computer. On one, I cannot open JPEG files with MS Photo Editor, giving forth this message- "unknown file format ".

However, jpeg is listed in file types and the info looks that same as the jpg file type. Yet, jpeg files will not open. If I change the extension to jpg, then all is fine. But, I shouldn't have to do that. Any ideas?

Do not use / have this program. Load MS Photo Editor and check in Options / Preferences for file associations. If it does, enable JPEG.
OK from screen. Close / Open MS Photo Editor and try viewing a JPEG. If this option is not available and continues not to open JPEG, try the following.
First locate MS Photo Editor program .exe file in your program files and note it's path location and name.
    You can close this view.
Now open File Types view and locate JPEG file type. Click on "Change" button/option. This will bring up a dialog box with program listings. Click/highlight MS Photo Editor program / name. If it is not listed, click on "Browse" option. Travel the same path you previously used to locate MS Photo Editor. Click/highlight, OK. Put a "Tick" in "Always use this program to open this kind of file ". OK

Hi Dennis, there are no options/preferences choices and the File Types info is already complete as indicated by the fact that whenever I try to open a JPEG, MS Photo Editor is started and attempts to do so.

Hi Pete- I read the KB article with hope but it says that to bypass the problem, just open up the file by using Open With/ MS Photo Editor. Unfortuately, the same message is displayed "Unkown File Format ".

Why does a four letter extension like jpeg even exist when jpg seems to do the same thing and if I convert the extension to jpg, it works just fine? Is there a way to automatically convert jpeg's to jpg when clicking on such a file?

    Thanks, Lar

Sorry our suggestions did not help. The following post is from Wesley Vogel - MS-MVP Windows Shell/User.
Difference between JPG and JPEG .

Towards the bottom of his post, note the following
See provided download links for above program.
