    Hi Guys,
I have recently become interested in finding out how to further protect my PC from incoming and outgoing attacks via vulnerable ports. I was hoping that some one could let me know how I can close certain ports off so I can make my PC less vunerable. I have used Shields Up to scan the first 1056 ports and the results are; Ports 0,21,23,135,139,254,255,445,593 are stealthed and Port 80 is open.

I am using Norton Internet Security 2005 (firewall set at high) along with Norton Anti Virus, I connect through a D-Link Wireless Broadband router with Firewall capabilities and my ISP blocks certain ports at their servers as well.

Can someone help me to better decipher exactly what the scan results are telling me? Thank you all for your help in advance. More results are listed below.

There are many known problems with Microsoft's Personal Web Server (PWS) and its Frontpage Extensions that many people run on their personal machines. So having port 80 "open" as it is here causes intruders to wonder how much information you might be willing to give away.

The port scan is scanning your D-Link which then forwards the pings to ports on your computer, it's not scanning your computer directly. Port 80 is the common port used for web servers. The D-Link has a built in small web server so you can access its control panel via your web browser.

There is likely a setting in the D-Link to "block WAN requests" or 'block annonymous pings ". Enable that feature and you should get Stealth to all ports in the scan.

I believe the D-Link setting is called "Discard PING from WAN side ".
