I decided to try Open Office word processor. 60 MB. it took about 5hrs. last night on my slow dial up connection, but everything seemed to go without a hitch.
After downloading to CD, Open Office 1.1.2, and attempting to open the
"F "(CD) file my cursor locked up . The only way to clear is to shut
power off to the machineand reboot. the CD does the same on two different
machines. The CD was working fine previous to download. Any Ideas?
I did forget to disable AVG.
I`ve got a query in to them but I`m not too optimisticabout that.

Operating System Windows 98 (build 4.10.1998)
    Processor 366 megahertz Intel Celeron
    RAM 160 Megabytes Installed Memory
    Hard drives{2} C-D 16GB free
    CD Burner Roxio Platinum 5

Try copying the downloaded file back to the harddrive from the CD and installing from there. If you get the same results (computer locks up), it's most likely that the file got corrupted during the download.

Maybe I wasn`t clear enough or don`t know what I`m doing, Miz. Good chance, both ways :). This CD-R I downloaded to, has some other folders with stuff I`d saved to it previously. Plenty of open space left like maybe 600 megabytes. When I give it a LH click with the mouse it gives me the hour glass for just a little bit then it locks up, that is, the cursor won`t operate, the LH or RH click has no effect, the file, edit, etc. dropdowns won`t. The "F" Icon with the CD name under it just sets there. It should open and show me the folders and new download. No such luck. Shut the machine down with the power switch, it reboots and everything is OK until I try to open th CD-R again. Maybe I should download to the hard drive and see what happens. I just didn`t want to lose the other stuff I`ve stored on that CD.
One other thing I noticed, in the left hand frame where it shows the percent of used, and open disk, it looks right but when I click to open. the F Drive, the panel at the bottom of the blank, white, screen shows 0 megabytes. I thought maybe that was normal, and would probably read correctly when the folders were loaded to the screen? Which ,of course, doesn`t happen. Thanks for the comeback. I`m open to any suggestions

The only thing that comes to mind is try viewing the contents of the CD through Roxio. Open Roxio as if you were going to burn more data to the CD and see if it can read it. If not, the chances the CD is going to let you retrieve the data off of it seem pretty slim.

Open Office is a great program, btw. I read somewhere the new version even permits creating pdf files? Can anyone confirm that?

Generally, it is better to download to the hard drive, then burn to cd, later. I install downloaded software from the hard drive, then burn a back up. Is hard drive space a consideration?

Stick a known working cd in, and see what happens. If it locks up, the cd burner may be bad. Also, look in device manager and see if there are any question marks or exclamation points. Also, sometimes Roxio doesn't play nice with XP (If I remember correctly, you have XP, right?) Go to their website and make sure you have all the latest updates.

    Best of luck,
    Johanna

Thanks to the pair of you.
Miz, I seem to recall a repair in the Roxio program, I`ll try that. I feel like I`ve got two chances to retrieve the old files, none, and none whatsoever :)
No big problem, I`ll just have to transfer them again. Thanks.

Johanna, glad to hear that Open Office is a good one, I was going to give it up but I believe I`ll try again tonight and download it to the hard drive.
The CD burner works fine except for this one disk. Specs for my system are in my first post.
    Thanks Again

P.S.I see I have an E Mail from Open Office. They must have a pretty good Help Dept.
I`ll report back if there`s any thing exciting!

After chasing things around I came to the conclusion that either the disk was bad or a glitch in the download was causing trouble.I was unsuccesful on retrieving any files.
I have the downlad on my hard drive now and WinZip opened it,I`m approaching installation with caution. I haven`t seen anything about an uninstall If I decide I don`t like it. Thanks for all the help. Thought you might like to no where I had got to.
