I have Windows XP operating system and Open Office 2.2. When I create a doc. and then save it, the icon is no longer the Open Office doc icon but I guess what I would call a neutral icon. I do not know the name. When I click on it, I get a list of programs and when I select the Open Office program, the doc opens as an office doc. I can also right click on the icon and select the option- OPEN WITH.

I know that the file association is not working properly but I cannot seem to reconnect the icon to the correct program.

When you RT.Click and choose Open With... Choose Open Office... you should see a box at the bottom.. Always use this programme... Put a tick in this box and these files will be associated with Open Office from now on.

    Thank you for the reply.

The little box is grayed out. Somehow I have to manually repair the association.

OK! Try RT. Clicking on the file and choose Properties. You will see... Opens with... and >> Change. See how that goes!!

    Go down this route ....

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types - scroll down the list to the Open Office file extension for a document - no idea what that is - highlight it and you should see which program it is associated with. If, as I suspect there is no association or the wrong association click on Change. This will bring up the Open With box that you have already seen via a different route. Can you select Open Office and is the 'Always use' box still greyed out. If so try making a new association by clicking on the New button. You may have to delete the old association first using the delete button.

When I right click and select properties, I get three tabs. General, Custom and Summary but there is no place to select on how to open the icon.

If I click on an existing Open Office document icon, that was created before this problem started, then, yes, I do have the option to select which program to use to open the file.

I have been fiddling around trying different ways to create a new association and but nothing seems to work. I continue to create a doc, save it and then get that pesky icon that will not open.

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Open Office but I will try again to see if that makes a difference. I know that there must be some way to connect the program with the icon so that it will open but I am not having any luck.

Thanks for staying with me. Since I first posted I uninstalled and reinstalled that giant program but the Open Office forum provided the correct answer. When the save as dialogue box opens, there was an unchecked option that says "Automatic File Name Extension ". Once I checked it, my new doc is saved as a Word 2000 doc and the icon displayed is an Open Office Icon.

Thanks to both of you for the support.
