    To all experienced users...
After trying to get my P.C. back to 100% after having my IE explorer hijacked, i am now prepared to do a Fdisk/format and reinstall.

I am going to concentrate on freeware and open source alternatives, my question is after fdisk/format and re-install win xp home, what would all you experienced users recommend i install in what order I.E.
    1/ registry mechanic
    2/ regscrub
3/adaware - have been told to install adaware and not bother with spybot, now theres a reason for debate : )
    4/ norton anti virus

Etc, Etc. please could as many people give me their suggestions of progs (freeware/open source) and in which order.

    Thank you : )

    IMO ....

    1. NAV before anything else and certainly before you go anywhere near the web. AVG Free as good freeware alternative.

2 Kerio Personal Firewall - ditto although SP2 firewall is fairly competent.

    3 Microsoft AntiSpyware

    3. SpywareBlaster 3.3

    4. IESpyads

Beyond this the order of installation is not important.

    5. Ad-Aware SE AND Spybot - for occasional use - MS AntiSpyware does a good job especially as it constantly monitors the system.

    6. RegSeeker (AFAIK Regscrubber XP no longer supported)

    7. Everest

    8. Tweakui XP

    9 Firefox as alternative Browser

    Etc, etc.

    1. You do not need to use fdisk and format.
    2. boot from the xp cdrom, the disk utility can be run directly from there, delete the existing partition(s), recreate new and format at least one of them ntfs and install xp to that partition.
    3. at first boot, make all your services configs, desktop settings, load any additional hardware drivers needed, tweaks, etc.
    4. (good if download ahead of time and save to a cdr) Install XP SP2.
4 a. config xp firewall (on or off) and readjust Services.
    5. rt click My Comp and select manage, and now click on Disk Mgmt and format any other partitions. It's best to use disk mgmt after SP2 because XP prior to sp2 can only recognize certain disk sizes, so if have a 200 GB disk the space will never be seen by xp unless have sp2.
    6. next, go to windows update and get any other wanted updates.
    7. install 3rd party apps you want in any sequence.

verdi--I think both TonyT and PeteC are recommending that you activate the firewall before going on the internet (to download the other programs) after doing the cleanup.
