First a thanks to various members for your assistance a few months ago while building a new machine. The more I figured on it, the less the available budget became and ended up building a budget machine. However... I think for the money I put in it, I did good. Thats another story, but ended up with a ECS 661 FM mb (I know, but hey, it was free), 2.8 p4 with hyper thread something 1 mg L2 CPU, 1gig PC 3200 DDR400 Ram, 36 gig Raptor, a free 4x video card (SIS I think, but its temporary), free 10 bay small server case w/ 400 wt PS. Basically I'm it for the price of a used CPU, 1 gig new ram, and the raptor. Other stuff like CD-Rom/RW, Zips, and Floppy Drives I pulled from old stuff around here. Finally bought a new OS too... Win XP Pro (not all that sure I like it yet). After 25 years of seeing and controlling everything on them... XPs hidden way too much... at least Its not in the proper places anyway.

    ... my question.

When I installed the Rapter I divided it into two volumes (yea C & D) and alotted 10g and 26g respectively. I did this with the intent to only have the OS and a couple drive intensive progs on C and all the normal other stuff on D. Well guess what... even though you tell an program install to install to D... 3/4 of it is installed in "Documents and Settings/Applications" or somthing like that in C. Well you guessed it... the 10g in C is running out (Yea, I wanted the 74 g rapt too...but my dollar bills seem to be smaller than most these days).

So... since nothing in XP is even remotely what I'm used to... how do I realocate the volumes (eliminate D..), add the 26 to the 10 for a single volume C at 36g? (Without rebuilding and reinstalling XP etc.)

Thanks... afraid I already know...but had to ask anyway. Dave

    dem45133,

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but since you already know that it can't be done ...... ;) ...... !

Even if it was possible to merge the two partitions, the installed programs would be messed up by the "no longer valid drive letter ".

Some people around here do separate the programs from the system but for the very reason that you "suffer from ", I see no point. I do however see a point in separating user data from the system (and programs). It makes it easy to protect against system or hard disk failure by creating Images (I'm using Ghost) of the system partition to a partition on a different hard disk. That second hard disk can also hold a partition for backups of user data.

    Dave,

You can use a 'partition' program such as Acronis' DiskDirector or PartitionMagic (now owned by Symantec) and move 'free space' from your D to your C partition. I separate all my program installs onto a separate partition and my WinXP install is still under 8 gigs. If you don't want to get a program to change your partition size... uninstall those "drive intensive" programs from C and re-install them on D. There shouldn't be a noticable difference in performance. HTH

Oh... Good... was hoping there was a way

    Thanks much

Have a new Norton System Works and FW bundle I'm planning to install (and remove this ISS 05). The book/information pamphlet says basically nothing about what's in its Norton Utilities. Seems years ago I remember norton utils being able to work on partitions.... but that was back in the DOS/preW311 days. Anyone know if its in the current "Works" or is it a separate product?

    I'll also check with symantec.

    Nevermind

Its listed separately at Symantec. $69

Think I'll just clean out whatever I do not need on C and see what happens.

    Thanks again all.
