[Resolved] Only Firefox can connect to internet

    Hi,
Yesterday I had malware on my computer and ran the smitfraud fix to fix it. It got rid of the malware..but..I can now only connect to the internet with the browser that I was using at that time. I disabled my firewall to see if that was the problem..it wasn't. I have run Adware and Spybot.I have tried to download and install new browsers..they get the same "cannot connect to internet" page. My email program works fine as does Firefox. Any ideas as to what could have happened?
    Thanks for your time!

    Hi .

    Try repairing Internet Explorer.

Click "Start ", then "Search ", select "All Files and Folders ". Select "More Advanced Options" and place a checkmark beside the "Search Hidden Files and Folders" option. Ensure that "Search System Folders" and "Search Subfolders" are also checked.

In the "All or Part of the File Name" box, type ie.inf and in the "Look In" drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder. Click the Search button.

In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder. Right click the ie.inf file and click "Install" on the context menu. Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Do you use zone alarm or some other form of software firewall?

I have a firewall and have already disabled it. It's not that. I had to get rid of malware the other day so I think it has something to do with that.

I have EZ Firewall. I disabled it to check and it still won't connect. The other day I had to run Smitfraud.exe to get rid of the malware and then this started. I can access the internet by ever means except IE. It was working before Smitfraud but not after.

    Hi Angela :)

First, please delete the HijackThis you currently have. It is an outdated version. Then download the HijackThis Installer from here and install it.

Next, download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.
    • Close all applications and windows.
    • Double click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
    • When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.
Post the contents of main.txt only for now.

I would also like for you to post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt

    Looks clean enough. :)

Download Winsock XP Fix and save it to your desktop.

Scan again with HijackThis, place a check next to the following entires, close all open programs and windows then click Fix Checked.

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:1054
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = cgi*.ebay.com;disney.go.com;msa_e1.ebay.com;rhapso dy_app*.listen.com;<local>

The download link you sent for winsox is opening in IE and I can't download from there since there is no connection. Do you have another shortcut or the actual download?

    Thanks

I believe that with Firefox you need to right click the download link and select 'Save Link As'.

    That's Great news! :D
Update your antivirus manually and reboot. Email monitoring may kick right back in.

    Sorry to re-bother you~~
I rebooted and it didn't fix the antivirus thing. Just wanted to know what you thought about this pop-up I get over it that says" Limited internet connection or none at all. When you click for details you get:
Network Connection Details: And next to Physical address you get 00-11-08-10-59-B7
    IP Address 0.0.0.0
    subnet mask 0.0.0.0
and all the rest of the listings have 0's after it.
If you think it's nothing and I should ignore it I will. My optimum account has it's own email scanning before I get the mail.
