Only Firefox and Netscape work outside my office

    Hi folks,

Bit of a problem - hope someone can sort it.

This is my office laptop. When I'm hooked up at work, using a cable to connect to our system, all browsers work. However, when I'm outside the office, such as now, at home on my wireless, only Firefox and Netscape work. This is okay, as I mostly use Firefox anyway, but it's a pain in that I can't use standard MSN Messenger or stream music using Windows Media Player (like my beloved Jazz FM!), etc. To repeat, it's not a problem with the router or with the connection in general, as Firefox and Netscape work perfectly.

Does anyone know how I can get all of my other programs to realise what Firefox and Netscape seem to know without any help?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Connect your laptop straight to the modem, and see, if problem remains.

Thanks for your reply. Here's the thing:
    • The modem is locked away by my landlady.
    • If Firefox and Netscape can work, how can that be the problem? If there's a reason I'll be happy to believe it, but I just can't think why it'd be the case.
    Chris

My whole point is to check wellness of the router.
...and believe me, if there is something wrong with the router, it may act like that, giving you connections through some programs, but not through others.
How are you connected at the office? Hard-wired, or wireless?

    Here at the office, hard-wired.

What is wrong with the router and can I perform this check without having access to it?

I'd start with going to Starbucks/your friend's house with a router, and see, if you can connect wirelessed.
Is it a new problem? Were you able to connect before?
What kind of configuration is it at your place? Some central router?

Wherever I go, I can ALWAYS connect with Firefox, but NEVER with Internet Explorer (et al), unless I'm using the hard-wired connection in my office.

I've just tried that with the office wireless and it's still true.

At home, there's one central router that transmits to the whole house. Even my Nintendo DS is able to pick it up. Just not this laptop's IE (or any other MS product on this machine, or Opera). Firefox and Netscape are all that work, and they both seem to work everywhere I go.

    What IE, Windows versions?
    How is your laptop security?
I also asked, if this a new problem?

Yes, IE v 7.0.5730 for Windows.

My laptop security is okay, I think - what specifically?

It is not a new problem. I have never been able to use IE unless I am in my office.

    What Windows version is it?
Have you try to reset IE (Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab>Reset button)?

I thought about resetting IE but it said that it wouldn't change the connection settings and that it would wipe all of my favourites etc.

For peace of mind export your IR Favourites, Cookies and Feeds before resetting ......

    File > Import/Export.

You require Safe Mode with Networking to connect to the internet.
