My laptop got a bit clogged and very slow after my children have used it for all sorts of games and music, so I decided to reload Windows 98 (which I have on a disk) I formatted the C-drive and reloaded (tried twice) Windows 98. However, the machine now only has a choice of 2 (black&white) or 16 colours, and the screen is set at 640x480 px. only. This means that when the full size of the actual screen is used everything is of course enlarged from 640x480 which gives a very poor appearance. When I go into "Display Properties" and "Settings" I cannot change the "Sceen area ". I have reloaded this machine before without any trouble.

    Any idea what is wrong?

Correct Video Drivers? There was no question of any video drivers when I loaded the software.

(Please note that I will change my experience level to "beginner" from "intermediate "!)

I don't know how to load or even FIND a video driver. Any more clues, please?

Check at the laptop manufacturer's web site and see if they have a set of drivers available for your model and version of Windows.

Most manufacturers not only have the drivers available for download, they also have installation instructions for the different drivers.

First, look through the CDs that came with the laptop to see if any contain drivers or something for "video adapter. "

If not, usually if you go to the web site of the manufacturer of the laptop and go to the Support section, there will be a way to search for drivers for your make and model of laptop.

If that doesn't help, and if the video card make and model isn't on the documentation that came with the laptop, download and install Aida32 Personal System Information on the laptop. When you run it, it will give you all sorts of information about your computer, including the video card under "Display. "

Or, finally, post the make and model of your laptop, including any model numbers, here and we'll help point you in the right direction.

If you do have the original CDs, then you'll probably have a system recovery disk as wel, which restores the PC to it's original state, with no software other than Windows and drivers, and it's dead simple to use: simply stick it in the CD-Drive, and re-boot the machine. Of course, doing this will erase all your data.
However, since you re-formatted the HDD, all your info is gone anyway, so that's not a concern anymore. :D

The beneift of doing it this way is that it will also restore all your other drivers (modem, ethernet, etc.) at the same time.
