I look after the website for a group of Folk Clubs who produce a quarterly paper magazine. This is sold by subscription and also on an ad hoc basis.
We are considering making the magazine available from the website as a pdf download.
Is it possible to use some simple form of DRM to prevent say, just one member paying for a download and then emailing it to all his friends.

    Thanks in anticipation.

No. Even if you password the PDF, the recipient can tell another the password.

You'd be better off using secure login to an online version of the magazine (Web pages). Subscribers will be reluctant to dish out their account login info to others.

Thanks, I guessed that would be the case.

Can you suggest how I go about setting up secure log-ins to the on-line magazine?
I am not all that familiar with software.
I will also need a shopping cart facility, but I believe you can buy that kind of service.

The site would have to use a content management system or blog software such as Wordpress. These are sites that use a database and a scripting language like PHP. Similar to forums such as this one, where subscribers (members) can login to see content hidden from non-subscribers.

Most such systems have shopping cart plugins or other easy integration.
