    Hi,

I have 2 laptops. They both have Windows 2000 Pro. Is there a transfer utility(like in XP) or third party utility that I can use to transfer the files and settings to the new laptop so it all looks the same?

If not, what would be the best way to get the files & settings to the new computer(emails mainly).

Thanks in advance for any help, tips and or tricks you can provide!

Can use netmeeting if both are hooked to the internet at the same time.

If you want them to be exactly the same you will need some sort of software that will make an exact image copy of the old laptop to some removable media like CD and then burn that to the new one.

Problem with that is all that I'm familiar with only work if the hardware is identical. Otherwise you have settings that work on one but absolutely not on the other.

File transfer - what Steve suggested will certainly work. Other options would be to use a "null modem" cable (serial [slowest], parallel, USB (I think) or network if both systems have network cards) and DCC (direct cable connection) to network them then copy/move files to suit yourself.

The Microsoft online help site has details about using DCC.

You can set up a DCC (Direct Cable Connection) using a suitable serial ( "null-modem ", I think), or preferably parallel (laplink-type) cable from the "make new connection" in Network & Dialup Connections. One PC acts as the host, the other the client (from where you carry out the copy operations).

Thanks for the suggestions! I ended up convincing the boss to let me install XP so that took care of it.

    Thanks again!
