I have a new computer with Windows 7. My old computer has Windows 98SE. I have an ADSL connection to the Internet. I will have both computers connected to the Internet during a change over period as I have a D-Link 512 router. I will be transferring selected files and folders from the old computer to the new. I welcome advice as to the best means to do this.

A LAN connection would be the best bet. Since you are already sharing the router, you are on a LAN. You would have to install Printer/File sharing in Win98 computer [if not installed], share the folder you want to copy & then just copy them from Win7 machine.

Otherwise the old sneakernet would do the trick.

Thank you rsinfo. The 98 machine does have Print/File sharing. Now I will get the enternet cable to connect the new computer to the router. I will have to check on the dlink 524 router installation manual but I expect the cable just plugs into one of the 3 remaining ports. I remeber it haad both LAN and WAN in the setup. The router was used for a wireless connection to another computer.
