I have been running Communicator 4.79 in Windows 95 quite happily for a long time, but have finally upgraded to a new laptop - and can't work out where to put my mailbox files from my old PC onto my new PC (running Win XP) so that the version of Netscape 7 that I have just downloaded will see them. I've copied everything over via a CD, and I can find my address book, but not any of my folders or messages in my mailbox. This is probably something that has already been answered many times in this forum, but please tell me what I am doing wrong?! Do I need to set up a new profile, do I need to rename the folders, or is there something even more obvious that I am missing here?!

    Many thanks

    Louisa

    Welcome to the Forum, Louisag!

    Louisa,

Have you set up a Mail Account in Netscape 7 yet? If so, then copy the Communicator 4.75 Mail files without the SNM extension to the Netscape 7 Mail Account folder. That would be: Inbox, Drafts, Templates, Sent, etc. Also copy your subfolders, which would be the SBD folders. Also delete any SNM files included in the SBD folders.

The Mail Account Folder for Netscape 7 is located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\pop.isp.net

NOTE: If you have existing Mail in Netscape 7, then you will need to rename the 4.75 Mail files, e.g., OldInbox, OldDrafts, etc. Doing so will prevent overwriting any existing Mail files.

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Ramona

    Junk mail problem

Thank you for that Ramona - I can now see all my old folders and emails, so I downloaded the 180 emails that have been patiently waiting on the server for over a week - and Netscape promptly deleted them all as junk mail. I have turned the junk mail filtering system off now, but can't find the 180 emails - there doesn't appear to be a junk mail folder anywhere - are they lost forever? Because if so I am hopping mad!!!

There is an outside chance that a new system will do that. The Junk controls, like any Spam Controls have to be taught or learn that the mail should not be treated that way. But, it does not just disappear. It ends up in the Trash folder if the settings are to do that. Otherwise, the mail should end up in the Junk folder of the account. There are some exceptions, like AOL and Netscape Webmail which send the Junk mail to the Local Folders. Mail which is marked Junk present an icon between the Subject and the Sender. You can stop the action by clicking on the icon. If there are a lot of messages marked Junk, it is impossible to keep up with them, but my way to handle this is to go to the Junk or Trash folder, and unmark them first. Then to move them to their account. Again some account will not accept wayward mail, and so they must be left in the Local folders or moved to an account of my choice.
It is very startling when this happens, for sure. The first time I saw the Junk mail settings was with Mozilla 1.3, I think, and the first day everything ended up in the Junk folder.
So, it will depend on your type account, but I never saw that the mail just disappeared. I have 12 accounts set up, including 2 Webmail (i.e.netscape.net) and 2 AOL. All but those three have Junk mail folders, and I had noticed that two of the eight accounts did not have Junk mail settings, but the folder was there.

    Junk mail folders

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any "junk mail" folder that they can have been put in, and depite searching all my local folders for any emails created over the last week, or any other search suggestions that would help me find them they seem to have completely vanished without trace. Unless the junk mail folder is hidden somehow I don't know what else to do. Anyone got any suggestions?

I have read about isp.com, and it seems to be quite reasonable. They have free spam controls, and this is great because you will know that about 90% of the messages will be ok. That's the only way that i can use one of my accounts.
I have seen only once a disappearance of a e-mails which were marked spam. That's why I mentioned AOL, because it happened with an AOL account, which has no Junk folder.
I assume that you set up your account, in Netscape, as a POP account. In such case the e-mails marked junk would have landed in a visible place.
Most important, did you see your messages' Junk mail icon? I know that I am given some time to deselect the rare ones which turn up false position, but the disappeance from the Inbox takes several seconds. Is this what happened?

Unfortunately Netscape had a minor blip when faced with a deluge of 180 new emails, marked them all as junk and would not let me in anyway unmark them or read/preview them, so I had to close Netscape down and restart, at which point they had all vanished! I have now turned junk mail filtering off completely, but cannot find the emails it junked at all, and have accepted that they are gone for good. My advice is that anyone installing a new version of Netscape needs to check they are happy with the viciousness of the junk mail filter before downloading anything!

    Louisa,

Have you tried turning your Junk Mail Filter back on? Enable the Junk Mail Filter and set up it like this Screen Shot. I'm thinking that the Junk Mail Folder may appear once you have done so.

Another way to look for your downloaded messages is if you remember a subject line or a sender that you could put in the search feature when you use "Find ".

Unless the system crashed while the Mail was being downloaded from your server, the mail is somewhere on your HD. However, if as you said, there was a "glitch" meaning the program froze and you had to restart, that too could cause you to lose the mail.
