I am using the lasted updated version of OE6 SP1 I have 2 questions here:

    1) How do I incorporate an old OE6 message store I had copied as backup, 'InboxOLD.dbx' to my current OE6 'Inbox' or at least just into OE?

I tried using the obvious File > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Import from an OE6 store directory.

This isn't working....am I missing something here

    2) I have noticed that although there is nothing in my 'Inbox', the size of it is over 10MB. Can anyone explain this and what, if anything, can be done to reduce these bloated file/folder sizes despite their emptiness?

Have you looked at this guys site? He has lots of good explanations. If nothing in your inbox, why don't you just delete inbox.dbx via explorer, and drag and rename the old box to inbox.dbx in the same place. Do this with OE closed.

    Hi, Aleekat ~

That method works, thank you, but I would like to know how to do this for my other backed up stores that are not empty and would like to facilitate this throughy proper use of the 'Import' feature if possible

    Hi Bruce,

Don't think you can import other OE stores via import.

Suggest you copy/move your backed up stores, *.dbx files to your preferred location, then tell OE where they are and to use as the default store.

In OE Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder

I keep all my OE stores on a different partition to the OS.

No idea why your inbox shows 10 Mb - that doesn't sound right - mine is ~500Kb with a dozen or so messages in it. Suggest you take a look at Cleaning Up Messages on the Maintenance tab

    Hi, Pete ~

That confuses me about OE. If you can't import other OE stores, then what is the purpose of backing them up? You can't use them then, right?

I know how to import OL to OE and OE to OL and OE 4 into a new OE 5 or 6, but how is this accomplished withbacked up OE from the same OE?

As I understand it if you import into OE you will overwrite anything that is already there (inbox).

But you can still make a back up which is useable - back up all the *.dbx files to another location on a regular basis as you would with any other files. In time of need copy them back into the normal OE store or to another location and point OE to that default store.

Or am I missing the point?

Create a new folder in OE and name it whatever you want. Close OE and then rename the dbx file to the same name as the folder you created. In the folder where your OE files are stored delete the dbx file that was created when you made the new folder and then move the one you renamed into the folder. Open OE and you should have your messages. You can then move them to whatever folder you want in OE and delete the folder you created if you want.

As for your 10 mb inbox file, you need to compact your folders. Click file>folder>compact all folders. As with all database programs when you delete the messages in OE you don't recover the space that they took up. It just marks the messages deleted and you have to compact the folder in order to recover the space. If you have OE set to open in the inbox it's best to keep it as small as possible because if it gets to large it can cause OE to open slowly.
