    Hi...Welcome to the Board...

You don't mention any hardware info about your laptop, but Windows 98 should work fine. One note of interest, I would suggest Windows 98Se ...the original was ok (quirky with drivers). Second edition was a major improvement and IMHO, one of the most reliable Os's ever to roll out of Redmond.

    Cheers
    Jake

depends how much ram and hard drive space you have
Windows 98 on a laptop seems not to take much ram - laptops at that time were very expensive and overall very high quality components
Keep in mind that there are two distinct products - the initial windows 98 ( an small update on win 95) and windows 98 se ( second edition) which has a much larger driver base plus some added features
Win 98 se is a wiser choice and is the most popular of the two by far
You may have troubles with video and sound drivers
They are usually fairly well known chipsets sold to compaq
Either try the compaq / hp site
    If not - try www.driverguide.com
    ( a library of drivers)
You may have a driver from another maker for the installed video card or sound on your compaq laptop
For older less demanding versions of standard programs - direct x , adobe acrobat etc
    www.oldversion.com
