recently got an okidata 5300n color laser. try my hardest, i can't get it recognized on my comps (one win2k, one winxp home). my current network configuration is 2 computers plugged into my router, which is in turn plugged into my cable modem. i am able to see files on both computers, and even share my local (older) printer from one computer to the other.

however, my install cd/driver cd that came with the okidata is utter trash. it has a poorly designed interface that prevents it from running the driver installation section. i tried manually adding a printer, but when i get to the port needed, and input the printer's IP address in the tcp/ip, the wizard tries to contact the printer, and it ALWAYS fails. I cannot connect to the printer no matter what i try. the connection from the printer to the router is valid, as all the lights are on.

i am able to add a new printer, with the correct drivers, but connecting to it and getting it to print is the problem. it is absolutely impossible to get to it.

    help anyone?

A couple of questions that might help get you on the right path.

    1. Have you tried pinging the printer, and do you get a response?
    2. IP adress. Is it the default address or did you configure it yourself?
    3. Default Gateway. better set it the same as the computers on the network.
    4. Netmask. if you run a standard 192.168.*.* network you'd probably need to set this to 255.255.255.0
      [/list=1]

If all of this is too basic, and you've run through all of this already I'm sorry, but you've not given much info on what troubleshooting you've done.

I agree with Laage that it is probably settings that won't work with your LAN and need changing so they will.

However, Default Gateway. better set it the same as the computers on the network - only needed if you intend to have the printer work with PCs that aren't on your network. Otherwise, safer to leave it blank. No effect at all on the printer working with the PCs you have plugged into your router/switch and could possibly be a security risk if you teach the printer how to find the internet.

    Newt's right of course...

We're on a network with 4 subnets, so we need the Default Gateway set on our printers for the machines not on that same network segment. But on a smaller LAN it's better to leave it alone.
