I just spent a few hours reinstalling my wireless printer (forgot username and password---won't make that mistake again). Anyways, I'd like to avoid doing this again tomorrow, hence my question....

After setting up the printer, I gave the IP a static IP (out of the DHCP range of my router). This is all fine. But when I look into the printer properties, in Windows 7, in the Ports tab, when I click on the Configure Ports button, I see at the top a field called Port Name, which is the IP when it was originally set up . Right below that is the correct and current IP, which is different from the IP in the port name.

Now I can leave this as it is.... the printer is working fine, both wired and wirelessly. But will having the port named a different IP, goof things up? Or would I goof things up by changing the port name to the correct IP?

You can see a screenshot of what I'm talking about here: http://paulrittman.com/printer.png

Hi psaulm119, I just had to do the same thing yesterday. I had UFB (Fibre-Optic cable) installed and had to check and make sure the new Router was recognizing the PC's and Printer Wireless connections.
Easy with the PC (enter Router name and wireless network password) but the printer didn't respond.
I ended up completely uninstalling my HP 2540 All in one software. I went to HP and used the Detect and Install Wizard they provide. I just followed instructions on the screen.
All up it took about 5 minutes (UFB) and the Wizard did it all. The port connection etc and it was up and running sweet as. It was done automatically and I did not have to change anything.
If your Port was selected by the software and it works - carry on as the saying goes. Neil. :D

Yes, in the installation of the printer, I saw in the installation window that it was creating a port. This was created/named in the installation. And it is working.....

Its just that if I had to rename this, I'd rather do it now, but only if I have to.

It seems like you're saying that I can just keep it like it is now, which is fine by me.

Hi Paul, I'm not sure how the allocation of the Port is done - but if it's all working OK - I see no reason why you shouldn't carry on using it. Neil.

I have encountered this problem before too and I never found a way to rename that port - I had to totally uninstall the printer, then re-add it, then set the name.

I think it is a minor bug in Windows 7. I know in W8, besides being MUCH easier to setup networked printers (it is virtually totally automated), it does not use the IP address in the port name.

If me, I would just let it go.

I too wouldn't do anything... But odds are you can uninstall the printer.... Search the registry for the old/bad name - delete that and reinstall the printer.

The main thing is, can you print? If so, then it is just a minor annoyance that has been corrected in W8.

I can print, so I'll leave it be.

I really can't describe this as an annoyance, b/c its not like I "m opening up the Configure Ports tab every day, and getting annoyed by the discrepancy.

If Windows and my printer can function together like this, I "m ok.

I just didn't want to set myself up for networking problems in teh future, and then be told that I have to do this (delete and install the printer) all over again. If this was going to cause some type of conflict in my system, I'd prefer to address this now (while I still have a bit of spare time in teh summer).

But this is going to be marked solved. I have my answer.

    Thanks everyone.

Well, there is no guarantee you will not have to "do this all over again ". But with you using a static IP address assignment for your printer from your router, then chances are good you will not have to.
