I have a copy of Office 97 and when I went to do a custom install of it I noticed it has as Microsoft Outlook as one of the components that must be installed. The checkbox for it is dimmed and cannot be deselected. But I already have an existing version of Outlook Express installed which contains all of my email.

Is it going to overwrite what is already installed? Do I need to backup my emails, address book, etc., before I install it?

I installed Office 97 in XP and had no problem with OE6 being overwritten. I just assumed that since it was grayed out it meant it was not a consideration. Apparently it does that when it detects OE is already installed.

I do have good backup at all times so I wasn't concerned. You judge for yourself but I doubt it will be an issue.

    Good luck

Installing any version of Outlook with any version of Outlook Express already installed (or vise versa) will not affect either. Outlook and Outlook Express store mail, contacts, etc... differently so there is no danger of "wires" getting crossed (unless you start tinkering with Import/Export funtions between the two). The only thing that will happen is the later of the two being installed will try to make that the default e-mail application but all you have to do is answer appropriately when asked.
