    1. I recently installed Windows ME and Office 97 on a new computer. All ‘My Documents’ .doc files from my old W98 computer were then copied to ME via CD and at this time all are ‘Read Only’.

    2. Double clicking any .doc file brings up the message, “This file does not have a program associated with it for for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel "

3.I checked Folder Options>file types and confirmed .DOC is associated with Microsoft Word and is showing the W icon but still none of the .doc files will open.

    4. However if I open Word from the desktop s/c or 'Winword.exe' in 'Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office' and select File>Open I can open any of the .doc files!

    5. I also have another problem. The @ key prints “ and the “ key prints @ but I would not think that was associated with the 1 - 4 problem; would it?

    Regards,
    Pat

What will happen, when you remove a checkmark from "Read-only "?

    Hi Pat Alley,
Somewhere in the registry, your file assotiations are incorrect - if you
have TweakUI try a repair. The other possibility is that the template
normal.dot got corrupted in the OS change. Delete it and reboot.
    regards

Thankyou Broni and Merlin for the replies. Removing “Read Only” makes no difference.

I have done a ‘Reg Clean’ without success. I do not have Tweak UI nor do I appear to have a file called normal.dot.

    Regards,
    Pat

The location of normal.dot depends on your OS.

Win 9X puts it in either C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
    or C:\Windows\Profiles\Your Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
    or both

No need to reboot after deleting this file, just open Word and the file will be recreated.

I don't think file associations have anything to do with this file but on the other hand it does affect a lot of things and it won't hurt to try.

You can unselect Read Only on all of your files at once by selecting all of them, right click select properties and uncheck Read Only. If you have a lot of files it may take a minute or two. Just make sure that what you select are your files and not system files.

    Pat,

Did you copy anything else over with the files. I have a system that does the same sort of thing. It happens because I messed up my profile copying it back from a CD backup.

    I'd suggest this.

    Uninstall Office
    Create a new user account
Log in as the new user
Install Office from scratch (that is from source disks).

Been away so sorry for the delay. Thankyou Kevin and Reggie for your replies. I did as you suggested Reggie and Word is now working as it should!

    Kind regards,
    Pat
