I recently installed Office 2013 and have an issue with opening pdf files.
When I open a pdf, in an email, it opens in another window that I cannot close. I have to go to start (using W8) and reopen Office to get back to original message.

How do I close the pdf and get back to the original email.?

Are you using Outlook for email?
Save the pdf first, then open it.

Office 2013 has a feature called Read Mode. Attachments are opened in Read Mode within Office Applications. You can revert to the way Office used to handle attachments, i.e. open them in their associated programs, e.g. PDFs open in Adobe Reader.

File > Options > General >Uncheck “Open E-Mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view "

Office 2013 also hqas something called Protected Mode; an effort to make it more secure because some folks don't know how to determine if opening a certain file or attachment is dangerous or not. This too can be disabled:

File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings >Select Protected View >clear checkboxes.
