I just installed Office 2010 on my laptop, and confirmed that I wanted to try and activate over the internet. Started Word and got the message:

Microsoft Office Professional 2010 cannot verify the license for this product. You should repair the Office Program by using Control Panel.

It then closed down. This is a genuine license and I cannot work out why this is happening.

Where did you get the software from and has it ever been installed before?

Hi Steve, the software I got through the microsoft home use program. My stepdaughter works for the Govt and purchased it as per the terms that apply to her employment. It was installed on that computer before but somehow and I do not know what she did, but it disappeared, so I just re-installed it.

    You could try this:

    • Open a (administrative) command prompt (cmd.exe)
    • Navigate to \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
    • type cscript ospp.vbs /act (and press Enter)

I decided to uninstall Office 2010 totally and did a re-install. As I have another key from my Other half's Legal version, I used that key and it all went fine, now activated and working perfectly. We have 2 home user licenses, or should I say, the family does. I am still wondering how the original install went pear shaped. The only thing I can think of is that when I originally installed it on her computer a month ago I must have inadvertantly forgot to activate it. But that does not explain why the whole installation disappeared off her computer. Maybe she accidentally uninstalled it, but according to her she did not use office at all unit 3 days ago when she said it was not on her computer. I have never heard of a program just disappearing. I did a search for it when she told me it was absent, and sure enough it was not installed. This is when I decided to install it again and the trouble started. But as I stated, I have done another re-install with another key and all is good, so I guess the problem at this stage is solved.
