Decided to accept Microsoft's massive offering this morning on my Vista Business laptop - 10 updates amounting to over 200MB (remember when you got a complete OS or major office-type app on a floppy :).

( went in OK but the Office 2007 SP1 offering failed with error 78F. I've tried rebooting and repeating the update to no avail. Can't see anything useful following the help links.

One aspect I've not tested is downloading it again - each install attempt uses the same downloaded file so, if that's corrupt, I'll never get anywhere. However, I'm not sure where Vista stores its downloaded patches ready to install (nor what chaos it would cause by deleting it). However, I've seen another online report of a failure this morning (though no details or fix) so it looks like I may not be alone - anyone here had the problem and fixed it?

A total of nine attempts failed, having tried various combinations of repair, reboot, etc. A few people on the forum with similar problems, but having an installation CD, un-installed Office 2007, re-installed it and got SP1 to take (though some following that route were still no better off) - I don't have the CD as my copy is a Sony OEM, pre-installed version (though I've since ordered a CD from Microsoft).

However, the fix that worked on the 10th attempt, following advice given on the Microsoft forums was to put a CD in the CD drive - any non-blank CD (I used a CD-R with some backed-up files on it). Apparently, though MS are still to confirm the root cause of the problem, having a CD in the drive forces the installation "to look to repair the MSOCache hidden folder ".

This was a new fix for me but thought it worth posting here as it could be useful as a near-last resort.

    Hi Pete,

I was wondering if SP1 for Office 2007 is needed at all, if the updates for Office 2007 have been downloaded and installed religiously.

I also wonder if any SP for XP and/or Vista is needed for the same reasons above.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Service Packs generally contain far more than the critical patches and a few bug fixes and their installation is to be recommended. They will often include large quantities of rewritten code and on occasion new or improved features, the latter particularly so with OS's. Subsequent security updates are likely to depend on the installation of the previous Service Pack(s).

XP SP2 was a major revision to XP - almost a new OS and SP1 for Vista will be a major overhaul of the OS too.

General info about XP SP3 does suggest that it is only a roll up of the patches already issued plus a new feature which will not apply to home users. However beta testers are claiming a performance enhancement with SP3 installed, so there may be more under the cover than a simple roll up.

    Pete

Thank you so much for all that information. I would have made a big mistake passing on the Service Paks. Now I wonder if I, too, will have a problem installing SP1 for Office 2007. Any recommendations before I do the deed?

I doubt it you will experience any problems - those that do occur are rare. This thread is the only one on the subject.

You might like to download the update to hard drive and install from there .... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...94-992C-4165-A997-25DA01F388F5&displaylang=en

    Ah Pete

Great minds think alike! Came back to let you know that I installed the SP1 for Office 7 from my HD. LOL. I also installed SP3 for Office 2003 and Visio 2003. No problems so far. Thanks a bunch. :)
