It would seem to me that Outlook Express 6 (or any mail pkg) would have some practical limit to the number of messages, size of files/folders, etc. I ask because I have a user that gets 200+ mail messages a day and doesn't delete anything, mainly because it's a lot of spam and it never gets read or opened.

Does anybody know what the practical limit might be when using WinXP? Is there a max size in MB to the folders that OE can open? Is there a max to the number of unread messages?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Jim - Welcome to the Board :)

I don't know what the limit is, but OE can foul up if the folders get too large.

Maybe some information here Inside Outlook Express

I also don't know specifics but I do know that too much stuff in the inbox, deleted, and sent can cause performance problems.

If the user archives his email, an archive over 2Gb just quits working. You can run a couple of utilities to give some access to it but part of the contents are trashed beyond repair.

In OE 6 you can use the save as button on the toolbar to save a message to the harddrive if you have the message highlighted. And Control A (select all) will highlight everything in a folder. Press control and click on any exceptions, and then just click "delete ".

My ISP has a 10Mg limit on individual emails, and I get a lot of "big" emails because of my work. I have found that if I save the attachment and "double delete" the original email that I have less trouble with my folders. Now and then they get corrupted, or disappear, like Newt mentioned. Sometimes they can be recovered using software like dbxtract etc, esp if you keep your dbx files on a separate partition from the OS. Sometimes not. Anything I truly don't want to lose I save, or I copy and paste the text to notepad and save, to D drive, of course.
