Hello! I have win98se, OE 6.0, IE 6.0 and hope someone might be able to help me?

    (1) Since yesterday I've been receiving the following error message without any apparent (to me) reason each time I click on Send/Receive):

<<Message number 1 could not be retrieved. Account: 'pop.rcn.com', Server: 'pop.rcn.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Could not read message file', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD>> (And each msg gets a subsequent number. I checked one of your responses about deciphering these messages but didn't find this particular one...)

    (2) On one of my OE accounts (the others ok so far), it refuses to save the msgs thus:

    a. Copying or saving from "Sent" to "Draft" the error msg says:

<<The selected message(s) could not be moved. An OE store file may be damaged. Use a utility such as ScanDisk to verify and repair any damaged files.>>

    b. Copying or saving from "Draft" to "Draft" a short error says:

    <<Cannot save this message.>>

These messages are new to me. Never happened before. Also, I frequently use the above mentioned utility and all the usual others to keep the puter going with as few interferences as possible.

I anticipate many thanks for any help about these 2 mysteries! Adela

Have you tried add/remove programs from the control panel and selecting to do a repair of IE?

How big are your stored folders?

Hello Newt and thanks for reply. Are you saying to go to Add/Remove and remove the IE program, then sort of reinstalling it??? Will this delete all I have under this program? Maybe I'm not understanding your kind explanation?

As to size of my folders (I guess we're talking about the "Draft" folder at this time?) It only has about 10 or 15 email addies, so the room doesn't seem to be the problem...

Any other suggestions??? Thanks again. Adela

When you go into add/remove and click on the Change option button, you get a menu of choices and repair is among them. Pick that and let the thing try to fix itself.

Thanks but I don't see any "Change" button in the Add/Remove window. All I have is 3 tabs: Install/Uninstall, Windows Setup, and Startup Disk...Maybe you're thinking of XP? Thanks again. Adela

    Adela,

Newt is correct and is not thinking of XP :)

In the window beneath the Install/Uninstall tab you should see a list of programs which should include Microsoft Internet Explorer SP1 & Internet Tools or similar wording.

Highlight this and hit the Add/Remove button

You should be presented with a dialogue box with the option to Repair Internet Explorer.
Search your hard drive for *.dbx files - these are the store folders for IE - and let us know if any exceed say 10 MB.

Oh thanks so much, Pete and Newt, I guess my myopia didn't let me see the list because I was looking for the "change" button (could'nt see the forest because of the trees? LOL!). I didn't know it could be so simple (at first sight anyway). I searched for all *.dbx files (didn't know I had THAT many) and none of them were MBs, only KBs.

However, yesterday in desperation, I moved the contents of the corrupted "Draft" box (I just had about 20 or so items) to a "Temp Draft ", and just changed the bad one for "Draft.old" and this did the trick...so far. But I'm so grateful to both of you for letting me know about this other way which seems easier and I'm keeping for any future need. :) Adela

My bad - I did say you would find 'repair' when you clicked the 'change' button. Sorry about that.

I didn't have a 9X system handy and evidently mis-remembered the way it would display.

    Glad you found it though.
