Lately when I go to insert a file attachment instead of one icon called say when.txt I get about 9 icons with the individual letters w h e n . txt and maybe another one or two blanks-sometimes it also includes the document and settings letters with a separate icon for each and you end up with over 40 icons in the file attachment area of OE. This would appear to come from the C drive folder Documents and settings. If I log into safe mode it inserts the file attachment as it should.

Clicking on any of these multiple icons for that one file attachment that it is supposed to be evokes the response - for instance if I click on the letter p
with these multiple icons I get "Windows can not find 'C\P' . Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To seach for a file , click the Start button , and then click Search "

Has anybody got any clues as to what is happening here?

Not heard of that one before :( Don't know which OS you are running (always helpful to post this plus IE version, but ...

Win 98 - Control Panel > Add/REmove Programs > MS Internet Explorer > change/Remove and select Repair in the dialogue box.

Win XP - First step is to run System File Scanner ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow noting the space before the forward slash and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, have been replaced look in Event Viewer

    Sorry -running Windows XP Pro.

The only think I found mentioned by the event viewer when I ran the scan was sfc_os.dll v5.1.2.600.2180

Forgot to mention as well-if I drag and drop the file onto the email it attaches normally as well. It is only when I use the Insert/File attachment option.

I have fixed some strange, one-off problems with XP by opening a cmd prompt and running chkdsk /f. Worth a try.

Also, but after the chkdsk, if you aren't running SP2 and all the post SP2 updates, you need to be.

Have you run a full system virus scan recently?
I have encountered several other people who get this on the recieving end, meaning that there are senders like you who are sending ones like this.

The problem still exists. As I can drag and drop the attachments I can overcome the problem-but the frustration is not knowing why it is happening in the first place.

It will also attach normally if I am in safe mode.

Have also done a full virus scan and no nasties detected.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

Are you copy and pasting or using the insert option?
Next time this happens , go to start / run and type clipbrd and hit enter
See if there are multiple copies of it in your clipboard.

Also, are you using some unusual font? A custom template?

You may need to run the IE repair wizard (OE is considered part of IE)

Although I prefer the command line method listed here

I have re-installed SP2 -tried repair jobs. Checked for nasties.

I am using the Insert /file attachment option. The Insert/Picture works as it should just in passing. Tried Outlook and it attaches as it should.

The files I am attaching could be in any folder. Sometimes for instances I may be attaching a screen shot graphic from a folder I called D:ScreenShots.

    In this case the icons from top to bottom in the attach window for a file called page2.jpg are g p j D 2 e g a p blank s t o h s n e e r c s blank :

which shows in reverse except for the colon and D screenshots page2.jpg-the folder and name of the file with the D and the colon indicating the drive. All I should have in that attach Window is one icon called page2.jpg ......the file called be a text file or anything and I have only chosen this as an example.

As I said in previous message-if I drag and drop or go into safe mode the file attaches as page2.jpg as it should.

Has me puzzled at the moment. Sounds as though there may be a corruption in the program somewhere- but where as nothing repairs it.

That there is no problem in safe mode indicates that it is one of the programs which loads with windows which is causing the problem. It may be a customizing/ tweaking program or it may be malware.

    I would use CodeStuff Starter
To disable startup entries and/ or running processes which you suspect could be the cause and try to pinpoint it.

Have a program called Startup Guru-but I will give this one a run as well. Tried disabling everything starting up with it -but without success.

Your thinking is along the lines of mine-but so far have not discovered cause.

Do not overlook your antivirus. It may be scanning the files when you go to attatch them and causing corruption.

Disabled virus and firewall-still have the same problem.

I can get around the problem by dragging and dropping. But would like to discover what is causing the problem.

    Funny one

Got a new PC recently-transferred email to it. All working well for a week or so and now it has started to do the same as the old PC with the same symptoms as I started the thread off with. To me this points to some kind of corruption or removal of some necessary file -but trying to find out what and why seems impossible.

Get the latest version of Hijackthis (see quicklinks in my signature) and scan then post the log file.
