OE 6 refuses to remeber passwords - no matter what!

On my dad-in-law's box running XP and OE 6, Outlook Express refuses to remember his e-mail account passwords even if the OE account is setup correctly and the "Remember password" box is checked.

It's been like this for over a year now. He always has to key in his e-mail passwords. If you go into Tools>Accounts and check out the account, the "remember password" box is checked but the password is now gone!

Anyone have a clue what I can do to fix this? If this happened on my box, I'd lose my mind and probably reinstall XP from scratch. But that's not a possibility here.
