Hello, for a fw days I havent been able to type my work as my OE 6.0 (Win98se, IE 6.0) won't type certain letters or any other characters, including the delete function, etc. (This is the first time in 4 days that suddenly it's typing correctly but it will return, per my past experience).
A moment ago I couldn't even type "won't type letters" to search any similar problem on his wbsi. Would anyone know why and how to correct it?
Thanks so much for any suggestions! Adela

I do not recall coming across this problem with OE before and am surprised that the apparent loss of keyboard function is confined to OE - is that correct?

I suggest you run a repair of IE/OE through Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > MS Internet Explorer > Change and select the Repair option.

adela--If Repair does not help, is this happening after a few reboots?

Adela--Based on your last message, I suspect your present keyboard is close to dying. You can get a new one for as little as $15. Might be the best action. Or do you have another one already in the house?
What PeteC suggested omitted one step. After you find Internet Explorer (perhaps under Microsoft) in Control Panel|Add/Remove, click on Remove. Do not panic. You will be offered several options. One should be Repair. Check the box for that. And click OK.
    Good luck.
P.S. There are some people who have put their keyboard in the dishwasher and it emerged, working, after a low temperature dry cycle, but it really is not worth the aggravation.

Thank you Welshjim, I'm hurring to answer now that it's ok...not for long. I tried an old keyboard I had (don't rcall what was wrong with it) and it was just as bad, but I'm going to buy another keeyboard, but meantime I did find the "rpair intrnet" bu it said it couldn' rpair it and to clik on "add componnts" which I did and checked some I thought could hlp but it said they were already installed. So you're right that it might be the keeyboard. hanks again! Adla (Sigh!) :)

Hi Welshjim, (what a joy to again be able to type properly!!!) :) Thought you might like a little anecdote. After spending some time on the net trying to learn a bit about keyboards before buying, I chose a Logitech Model 967228-0403 which was a nice cream color one...but on my way to Staples store where they had it...I thought I'd try the closer Radio Shack and they had a $10 iConcept, black. Since she took it out of the box to let me feel the keys and since I remembered I had a credit coupon from them for...exactly $10 bucks! I bought it for better or for worse. LOL!!!

Thanks to you I now know what to do if it happens again. :) Adela

P.S. Now, on a separate post, I'll be able to ask for help on a problem which happened BEFORE the keyboard problem... :)

P.P.S. Funny that the smilies never work for me...Anyone knows why?

Sure. It's because when you type them you're typing :) . Leave the dash (-) out of it. Should look like this.
    Code:
    :)
    ;) :)

Adela--Thanks for posting back with the good news. $0 is not bad for a new keyboard!!
Concerning Smilies, this BBS has a bunch just to the right of the Post Reply window. If you click on one (or more) they will be inserted into the message wherever your cursor is blinking. And you can see the "code" for each when you do. The code will be translated into an image when you post. You can also type just the code, but you chose a code ( :) ) which does not translate into an image on this BBS.

Hi Welshjim and Zanders, and thanks for the tips on the smilies, but I had referred to actually clicking on one of the faces and either not posting it, or posting it at the top of the msg near the title (as it did now with this msg.) You say they are at the right, but I don't see any smilies at the right, only below the writing area... (?). Thanks again. Adela

P.S. Still funnier is that the brand new keyboard, in its original box, has a "lifelong" limited warranty!!! :)

From the description you give of your smiley problem it sounds like you just need to change the editor type you're using. Click on the User CP link toward the top left of this page. Then on the left side click edit options. On the next page, scroll all the way to the bottom to where you see "Message Editor Interface" and in the box beneath that select "Standard Editor - Extra Formatting ". Then click the save changes button at the bottom.

Now, I see you're a contributing member. When you do this and get back to the main board you'll once again be seeing advertisements. To get rid of them, go back to the same place where you selected the editor type and just below that you'll now see another entry that wasn't there before. It'll say "Forum Skin ". In the box under that choose Subscribers. Click the save changes button and when you get back to the main board the ads will be gone.

Anytime you edit your options you'll have to do this. I don't know if it's a bug in the software or what but that's the way it works right now. Give it a try and let us know if you get your smileys to the right of the message box.

    Smilies

Thanks for the formula to get the smilies at the right side, Zander! I got them, and I'll wait for when the ads appear to go fix them, just as you so kindly instructed. :)

Also thanks to Welshjim for a way to solve my monitor problem. I'll go and try it and will report back to you. Adela

P.S. What's "tags" as in, i.e., "Close current tag "? Also, what's the purpose of having smilies below when they don't work? Excuse my curiosity... ;)

    adela--
The Smilies below are icons that go into the second column of the list of threads when you enter a forum--not in your message. Not many people use them.
A bit complicated to explain briefly. Tags are ways to format what you post here (and in HTML and vbCode documents).
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/misc.php?do=bbcode
As you can see, formatting means to change the style or purpose of the typing, etc. That is how you create color or underline, etc. And on some Boards you can put images into a message using tags. (You cannot here.)
You put a "tag" at the beginning and end of what you want to format. For example the above two quotes above had {QUOTE} at the beginning and {/QUOTE} at the end when the sentences were written in the Post Reply window. (They actually had [] instead of {}, but if I used [] instead of {} in this post I would format the words "at the beginning and " into a quote.) You do not see the tags when the message is posted. You just see the results of the tags, or the formatting.
Tags have to be inserted at the beginning of what you want to format and then at the end. That is called opening and closing the formatting. (The end tag is a repeat of the letters used for the beginning tag but has a / in front of it.) If you did not "close" the formatting, the code would not know where to stop with the formatting action you are creating.
Just to confuse you, the buttons "Close current tag" and "Close all tag" do not work on this BBS. That is because the little lines and icons at the top of the area where you type in Post Reply do the formatting for you by typing the opening and closing tags when you click on them, enter the text you wish to format and then click OK.
    Hope this was understandable.

    "Smilies" and "Tags "...

Oh thanks so very much, Welshjim! Yes, your very thorough explanation is very understandable! I do notice them when I click on "quote" but didn't know they were called tags. Thanks again!!!! :) Adela

    New list of smilies

Hi sparrow, and thank you for the useful list of smilies so I can choose more moods! I wonder why they aren't placed here to be handy? :) Adela
