I am trying to set up three identical Samsung printers on our school network by IP address. One has accepted the name I have given it - ScienceLab1, however, he other two appear on the network as Sec followed by a series of numbers not as History1 RE1 as I set them through static IP address allocation. Is there a convention I should be following that somehow I have missed on these two?

Setting the name where? In the add-printer dialogs or in the printers' Web interfaces?

If the printer is already installed, you can rename it easily via the printer properties window.

    Thanks Tony,

I'm using the printers built-in software. Plugging it via a LAN cable and turning it on. Printing out the IP setting it's picking up then using that to create a static IP address. From there I have the problem - it's fine if I set up as a local printer with that static IP address and can name during the local set up but to allow wider network access to the printer is something I haven't worked out how yet - hence the question.

    What exact model printer?
Open a Web browser and enter the IP address of the printer in the address bar to access its Web interface. You should be able to change the name there and have it stick.

Thanks Tony. We have three identical Samsung ML-371x Series. With your help the issue is now resolved. Oddly in DHCP clicking on the entry initially didn't allow entry to properties but by double clicking it I got there eventually!
