I used Windows Vista Home on an emachine T5088. whenever I type either quotation marks, apostrophes, or back slashes (``) they come out doubled. That is I get " ", '', ``,l or not at all. If I just type a quotation mark once and a capital letter I get à rather than "I. Or à rather than 'I. I have to backspace and remove the extraneous characters. This problem seems to be in the computer because when I switch keyboards it persists. Anyone hve any idea what might be causing it?

What language have you got set for the keyboard layout in Regional Preferences? It sounds as though you may have something other than English selected?

With keyboard eliminated sounds like a system font problem. Either a system font is missing and Vista grabbed a weird 1 or it was changed.

In XP I’d look here: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes
And change the MS Shell Dig and MS Shell Dig 2 values.

Not sure if it’s the same for Vista
Do a search for Vista System Fonts – lots will pop up.
