    Hi

    just visited Windows Update, said I needed two critical updates (presumably new batch out as this machine needed none yesterday)

    so, on to the screen "Review and Install your Selected Updates ", Total: 2 = 3.7 MB, 11 minutes, and a button "Install Now "...

    but - they are not listed below the line with brief descriptions and the options buttons to remove individual updates??

    ==

    the last time I visited WU with this PC (Mum's) everything went normally...

    ==

    anyone else finding the same pls?

    TIA, and best wishes, HJ

    Hi Christer

    thanks for reply (speedy again :) nice one)

    I've tried revisiting WU and now all's working smoothly ?? what gives?

    ...only thing I did between the visits was clear out cookies and TIFs just in case... but then I'd cleared them out only a couple of days ago. Odd. I hope it's nothing wrong with this PC, I have to travel back home tomorrow and want to leave this computer as OK as possible...

    very best wishes, HJ

    many thanks for looking, BB...

    those are the same two I see now. No idea at all what happened the first time round... very strange.

    this computer already had 891711 applied - but ?guessing that showing 891711 again means that it's a rework of the original (from what's been said in other threads)

    best wishes, HJ

    Over a period of time and several occurences such as ( or similiar to ) yours with Windows Updates I have found it best to restart the machine just before actually getting the updates. And I do not mean just restart Windows. I mean actually power down.

    The restart may well get rid of things that may be running in the background.

    And a power down restart will also shut down any programs that MAY NOT have shut down properly. Just restarting Windows may not do that. I have learned that the hard way too. I THOUGHT it would but it didn't.

    And a powere down WILL clear RAM out better too.

    I do this with Windows XP also.

    Hugh Jarss,
    too speedy, Im afraid ...... :( ...... :mad: ...... only now do I notice that I'm in the Win98 forum and not the WinXP forum.

    I have two options, either to stop using the "search new posts" function or to engage my brain.

    I'll edit my post above to remove any misleading information ...... :eek: ...... !

    Sorry ...... :eek: ...... ,
    Christer
