I need to get a CD Key for WinXP from a machine that will not boot. The hard drive has crashed and naturally the person does not have their original key. I was able to boot a floppy with some registry tools on it and get the product ID Number. Anyone know of a utility that will let me enter that and back out the CD Key?

I know there are product to reveal the key on and active windows machine. Any that will just use the Product ID?

    Thanks in advance.

If it was an OEM preloaded system, the key that was used would not be of any value to you. That key is only for the vender to use in multiple installs and cannot be reused for any different configuration.

If however, it was loaded from an individual single user CD, the Product Code found on the machine's authenticity sticker will be all that you need.

In either case, you must now use the Product Key found on that sticker.

Unfortunately it was an upgrade so the Authenticity sticker is a key code for Win98.....Won't help me to do a re-installation.
