I have tried to install an old graphics program on my laptop with win 7 and get the message that it won't operate because ntvdm.exe is missing. The first time I tried to install I did not get this message but every attempt since. Since my laptop did not come with a windows 7 disc, can I get the file somewhere or do I really need it. I just restored my computer to yesterday before this happened.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

ntvdm.exe does not appear to be a native Windows file - at least it does not exist on my computer running Windows 7 Pro x64.

Have you tried installing the program in compatibility Mode? Would be very handy to know what program you are trying to install :)

NTVDM is a system component of all IA-32 editions of Windows NT family which allows execution of 16-bit Windows and DOS applications. It is not included with 64-bit versions.

    Pardon me for butting in,
I was wondering, can this file <ntvdm.exe> be obtained from MS and can it be installed on a win7/64 Computer to run DOS or 16 bit software?
    Thanks
    Sven
